Deck Love in the Summer Leads to Makeover Plans
Ah, the bliss of summer deck love! We are right in the middle of the Dog Days of Summer (marked by the Old Farmer’s Almanac as the 40 days beginning July 3rd through August 11th) and for many of us, there is no place we'd rather be than on our decks; or the deck of our favourite restaurants, pubs, or friends.
As you are circulating decks this season, take note of what you like about the decks you visit. There are more decking options, furniture and accessories available today than ever, so what a great time for a deck makeover!
Deck Love is a Long Term Commitment – Outdoor living space has become a favorite part of the home for many North Americans. The old style of constructing decks to a 10 foot by 20 foot single surface has been replaced by a growing number of expansive decks.
The best way to increase your outdoor living space is by using your second level deck as a roof for a deck area below. Deck waterproofing specialists like our Duradek trained applicators can provide a roof-grade deck surface on your upper level deck, enabling you to double your useable space with a protected lower level deck below.
This gives you the advantages of catching as much sun as you can on the top level AND protecting you with some shaded area below when you need it. Plus, let's face it, your deck is not a summer romance. You LOVE your deck and want to use it all year, and when you have protection from above that is possible.
Get Creative With Railings – There are many styles of railings available for defining your outdoor living space. There are traditional picket railings made with powder coated aluminum that can provide the classic look of wrought iron without the need for maintenance, or you can choose glass railings, topless glass railings or stainless steel cable railings in some areas.
Go one step further and combine any of the above options for a completely unique look. Durarail powder coated aluminum railings allow for standard or custom designs, and incorporating unique features can provide the best of design and functionality for your individualized deck.
The Shape of Things to Come – There is no need to be stuck in same old rectangular shaped deck with today’s decking options.
Choose octagonal, oval or multiple curves to create a unique shape that brings an element of contemporary style to the traditional feature of a deck.
Innovative new railing products like Durarail’s Panorama Universal Post that allows you to define a curved deck with a topless glass railing system that virtually “bends” around corners gives you almost limitless design options!
Multi-Level Decks – Decking trends like outdoor kitchens, permanent (as opposed to seasonal) outdoor furniture and fire features contribute to the use of outdoor living space being used as often as any other room in your home.
Incorporating multiple levels to your deck with distinct separation allows you to treat each level of your deck like a separate room. While your outdoor kitchen is on one level, your lounging area can be another and your spa is on yet another…the possibilities are endless based on your favorite leisure activities.
When your deck surface is protected with Duradek vinyl, the area below is kept dry; and even if a lower level of your deck is only elevated a couple of feet, that provides some great dry storage for gardening supplies, camping gear or other outdoor toys.
Want to show your deck a little love? Contact one of our Duradek installers to discuss your deck make-over options.

Duradek Cautions on Unproven Deck Building Products Technology
Duradek is very vocal about the truth that ‘new’ isn’t always better…especially when it comes to building products; and now Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation has discovered that basic truth the hard way.
The group built 104 energy-efficient homes in the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans. Dozens of those homes built from 2008 to 2010 included decks and stairs made from TimberSIL, a supposedly glass-infused wood that claimed to provide “an effective barrier in lumber to rot, decay and common wood problems” without using toxic ingredients.
This ‘new’ product’s lack of chemicals appealed to the Make It Right foundation because of its dedication to “green” building features, but the product performance fell short when premature reports of rot and decay started appearing in 2013...nowhere near the 40 year product guarantee.
As expressed in the New Orleans Advocate, “some local home builders and other non-profit executives said they saw the episode as a cautionary example of the problems facing many in their industry in trying to balance new, cutting-edge technology with time-tested construction techniques.”
Furthermore, Duradek is also a “green” product and is installed on untreated plywood to avoid the use of harmful chemicals.

The professionals at Duradek couldn’t agree more! We are cautioning builders about a potential similar issue in the niche vinyl decking industry with some manufacturers releasing highly suspect, unproven products into the market. (See Vinyl Deck Membranes Appearance Promises vs. Appearance Warranty).
It is unfortunate that Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation had not chosen the time proven Duradek vinyl deck membranes for these projects. Duradek has a proven 40 year history and has gone through several warranty cycles to be absolutely confident in the Duradek product and installation techniques.

Compare Cost of Maintenance Before You Renovate Your Deck
As soon as the first signs of spring appear, many of us begin to get out on our decks or balconies and often discover that the winter has not been kind to the appearance of our favourite outdoor spaces. But there is a big difference between having to clean your deck for appearance or re-treat it to maintain it's structural integrity.
The trick is to enjoy your deck more, but labour on it less. If you are considering building a new deck or renovating an existing deck, here are some things to keep in mind...
While slotted wood decks are a traditional go-to style of deck, many home owners or property managers are surprised and unprepared for the amount of work required to maintain them. Besides becoming unsightly when not regularly maintained, it is the safety concerns of a neglected wood deck that is far more serious than the aesthetic implications.
Wood decks finishes are required in order to penetrate the wood to slow down its ability to absorb moisture, prolonging the life of the deck and maintaining appearance.
Moisture wreaks havoc on unprotected wood, even pressure-treated wood. Moisture from rain, snow or humidity causes problems like raised grain, cupping and splitting. If moisture has penetrated the wood to the point where it has developed wood rot, the affected portion should be replaced immediately before the rot spreads to the entire structure.
UV radiation breaks down the lignin that holds wood’s cellulose fibers together in a process called photochemical degradation. This is what causes wood’s natural color to gray, and while this does not affect the strength of the wood, it is sometimes an undesirable appearance. The longer unprotected wood sits in the sun, the more UV radiation damage is done to the lignin, and it no longer bonds the wood fibers. As the fibers loosen and detach, any color pigments like stains will also fall away.
The key factor in longevity of a wood deck’s surface finish is to seal the wood before sun hits its surface. There are several different options for wood finishes like sealers, coatings, protectors and stains; and all of them have different advantages and appearance features. Solid stains act almost like a paint and block the UV rays, clear sealers only protect from water and still allow the UV radiation to reach the surface, and there are different levels of semi-transparent stains in between.
One of the drawbacks is that once the wood is sealed, it requires resealing every 1 – 3 years to stay protected. And even worse, if a coating fails, the process to replace it is a very unpleasant, labor intensive process.
1 – Sample: to see how the deck will strip and re-finish, a preliminary sample is recommended with a minimum of sanding a deck board and applying finish samples to have a sense of the end result.
2 – Pressure Wash – Chemically Strip and Neutralize: this is a best-left-to-professionals stage. Scott Burt from Topcoat finishes says, “The chems are hot, or caustic, and can do immense damage to people and property if not understood and used with discretion.” It is a two-step process: stripping and neutralizing and if not done properly, the job will not go well. The process is a fairly radical chemical reaction and is not a quick process, often requiring many passes and reapplication of chemicals and a great deal of clean water rinsing.
3 – Let Deck Dry, Then Sand: At least a day or two of good drying weather is required before proceeding. If not fully allowed to dry before the necessary sanding, the grain of the wood can be torn up easily. Then the process of sanding requires time consuming, knee-torturing hand sanders if you do not have access to and upright floor style sander. Then of course, proper dust containment must be used to provide protection from breathing in the dust of organic matter.
4- Apply New Finish: Finish must be applied using the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Whew! Just thinking about all that is enough to make you tired! Wouldn't you rather just pull out your deck lounger, pour a drink and kick back for some R&R?
However, if you are determined to have a deck that looks like wood, Duradek has even solved that - check our the new Legacy Wood Grain patterns.
With over 20 colours to choose from, Duradek’s UV stabilizers and mold inhibitors delay the natural aging process due to continual environmental exposure and offer an attractive deck surface for most outdoor design schemes.
So if you are considering a deck renovation, be sure to contact a trained and authorized Duradek installer in your area for a free estimate on your project.
*Duradek Ultra comes with a 10-year waterproofing warranty however many homeowners in Duradek’s 40 year history have reported that after 20+ years, their Duradek is still performing. Aging of membrane and waterproofing performance will be affected by environmental conditions and installer technique.
The trick is to enjoy your deck more, but labour on it less. If you are considering building a new deck or renovating an existing deck, here are some things to keep in mind...
Easy Maintenance with Vinyl Decks
Decks finished with Duradek vinyl membranes make it easy to enjoy your outdoor living space all year round with virtually no maintenance. Simply call a Duradek dealer, request an estimate and arrange for installation on a substrate of untreated plywood. Then Duradek is installed in one single application and (in most cases) is completed in one day. Your deck is ready for use immediately and is waterproofed for decades*. No reapplication required….ever! Additionally, if your deck is elevated, the use of Duradek membranes provides roof-grade waterproof protection for dry, usable space below.Continual Maintenance with Coatings
Wood decks finished with a coating are a completely different story.![]() |
| Once wood rot has invaded, deterioration is inevitable. |
Wood decks finishes are required in order to penetrate the wood to slow down its ability to absorb moisture, prolonging the life of the deck and maintaining appearance.

Labour Intensive Wood Deck Maintenance
For example, a Redwood Deck Restoration project that was featured on the Journal of Light Construction shows that a four-step process requires significant time and cost to complete, and once you have started the process; you are in it to the end. The four steps that are recommended include:1 – Sample: to see how the deck will strip and re-finish, a preliminary sample is recommended with a minimum of sanding a deck board and applying finish samples to have a sense of the end result.
2 – Pressure Wash – Chemically Strip and Neutralize: this is a best-left-to-professionals stage. Dry Below Decks Made Easy – Part 2: Below vs. Above
When a 2nd level deck needs to serve as a roof for a lower level deck or patio below, you can save time and money by using a SINGLE product that is approved as BOTH a traffic coating and roofing membrane in one. If you have an upper level deck surfaced with Duradek vinyl membranes, you don’t need the expense of an under deck drainage system to keep the area below it dry.
Whether for investment properties or your own residence, getting the most from your outdoor living space includes maximizing the usable space. By turning an upper level deck into a roof for a lower level deck below you gain the advantage of dry outdoor storage or a place to enjoy the outdoors even when the weather conditions are less than perfect.
Using a Duradek vinyl deck membrane is the ideal solution as it provides an attractive pedestrian deck surface while simultaneously acting as an approved roofing membrane with all of the waterproofing details that need to be considered with roof-grade waterproofing. Under deck systems only serve as a water routing system (and sometimes a ceiling for the lower level deck) but your exposed walking surface of the upper level deck would have to be addressed separately.
Last week we took a closer look a Trough Systems, which manage the water by routing it between the joists and is completely enclosed by upper deck above and soffit system below. This week we will take a closer look at Panel Systems which routes water below the joists and also often serves as the finished ceiling for the lower deck.
Installation of the actual system begins with attaching a wall trim around the perimeter to create a frame. This includes drilling into the outside of the house and any penetration is a point of vulnerability to be caulked and checked periodically to protect the building envelope.
All of the other pieces of the system just snap into the frame. In most cases a supporting beam(s) would be used to provide strength for the system. Basic panels serve as the decorative surface and are installed side by side to enclose the joists above. The panels are often PVC and they are flexible enough to install in the frame, but rigid enough to crack or snap when cutting to the appropriate size. The panels snap into the frame system and provide multiple non-permanent seals as they snap into each other to enclose the ceiling.
A gutter is installed on the outside perimeter to catch the water from the slope provided by the panels on the spacers. Water wicking or splash back can occur here so careful installation of the gutter is very important.
Like the trough system, panel systems still require the upper deck surface to be treated or installed separately.
Duradek vinyl deck membranes are installed in a single application with methods that consider the details required for secure waterproof protection of the building envelope. Since those critical waterproofing details are so important in protecting the home, Duradek is installed by authorized contractors that have been specifically trained in Duradek’s installation methods.
Water is managed by a 1” in 12” surface slope to the outside edge. Depending on the type of deck, waterproofing details such as edge flashing, drains, scuppers and a gutter system is included if required. All of these waterproofing details are heat-welded or caulked to be completely sealed. The seals are accessible for annual visual inspections. There is less of a chance of surprising leaks with Duradek.
Whatever motivates you for creating a dry area below your upper level deck, choosing Duradek and one of its 24 attractive colour options is the best choice for low maintenance decking that doubles your usable outdoor living space.
You can contact an authorized Duradek Installer in your area for a free estimate on your next decking project or to answer any questions you might have on deck waterproofing.
Check out last week’s article where we compare Duradek to the Trough style of under-deck drainage systems in “Dry Below Decks Made Easy – part 1”.

A Look at Under Deck Drainage Systems and Why They Might Not be the Best Water Management Solution
There are two basic types of under deck drainage systems; both of which function by allowing water to get through the upper level deck surface and route it between the joists to downspouts and gutters. Theoretically, both of these systems have advantages but realistically neither of these systems provides complete water-tight protection for the building envelope. Water is routed away from the structure, but moisture is still present and trapped with little to no air flow. In addition, since the water routing systems are enclosed, you are unable to visually inspect if all seams or seals remain intact, and only discover those points of vulnerability AFTER there is a leak.Last week we took a closer look a Trough Systems, which manage the water by routing it between the joists and is completely enclosed by upper deck above and soffit system below. This week we will take a closer look at Panel Systems which routes water below the joists and also often serves as the finished ceiling for the lower deck.
A Closer Look at Dry Below Deck Panel Systems
While a dry below panel system acts as the water routing system and ceiling for a lower level deck simultaneously, it also has its own set of challenges. Advantage - It can be used on an existing deck. Disadvantage - It is labour intensive as it relies on a sloped sleeper system to provide the slope needed to route the water. An elaborate spacer system is attached to the underside of the joists to provide a pitch of ½ inch every 4 feet.Installation of the actual system begins with attaching a wall trim around the perimeter to create a frame. This includes drilling into the outside of the house and any penetration is a point of vulnerability to be caulked and checked periodically to protect the building envelope.
| Installation of a below deck panel system. |
A gutter is installed on the outside perimeter to catch the water from the slope provided by the panels on the spacers. Water wicking or splash back can occur here so careful installation of the gutter is very important.
Like the trough system, panel systems still require the upper deck surface to be treated or installed separately.
Why Duradek is the Best Choice to Keep it Dry Below
Duradek vinyl deck membranes have been waterproofing decks for over 40 years. Duradek is CAN/CGSB, CCMC and ICC approved as a pedestrian traffic coating and a roofing membrane. It includes warrantied waterproof protection for 10 years, while its traditional service life reportedly averages 20+ years. Unlike many other vinyl deck products, Duradek also offers a written appearance warranty.Duradek vinyl deck membranes are installed in a single application with methods that consider the details required for secure waterproof protection of the building envelope. Since those critical waterproofing details are so important in protecting the home, Duradek is installed by authorized contractors that have been specifically trained in Duradek’s installation methods.
How Duradek Vinyl Deck Membranes Work
Duradek is adhered directly to the deck surface. The ideal substrate is ¾” T&G Untreated Plywood, however Duradek can also be applied to concrete surfaces. All seams are heat-welded to ensure no water can ever penetrate. The membrane is run up the inside perimeter of the deck against the exterior of the building before the flashing details are added. Particular attention is paid to any areas of vulnerability like door openings.Water is managed by a 1” in 12” surface slope to the outside edge.

Get the Upper Hand on Your Upper Level Deck
There are several advantages with designing your second level deck to provide cover in order to create dry, usable space below. Sometimes you need dry outdoor storage space for bikes, lawnmowers, sporting equipment or other seasonal items. Maybe you like to spend time outdoors all year round and that protected area provides shelter from the rainy days, or alternately in peak summer season you can get a little shade when you just have to get out of the sun for a while.Whatever motivates you for creating a dry area below your upper level deck, choosing Duradek and one of its 24 attractive colour options is the best choice for low maintenance decking that doubles your usable outdoor living space.

Duradek Shares How to Decorate Your Porch or Deck for Christmas
One of the best parts of the holiday season is how festive everything looks. All of the lights and decorations that are on display can make passage through even the most nondescript neighborhoods a magical and inspiring journey. In fact, neighborhood competitions and community bulletins that list the ‘best of’ holiday displays in December are an annual tradition for many families.
If you have Duradek on your outdoor surfaces, you have a beautiful deck or balcony to start with… but there are many options to decorate your outdoor space for that special holiday display. It just takes a little time and creativity to make your deck or balcony stand out and bring a little holiday joy to everyone around.
Decorating your porch or balcony starts with knowing your space. Whether you are working with a small front porch or an expansive deck, by measuring the available space you will know exactly how much room you have to work with. You will avoid buying more decorations than will fit in your space or alternately have a too small display that looks like you only partially decorated.
Taking note of available electrical outlets or sources is also important so you know whatever length of lighting you buy for your perimeter, that there is enough length to reach the outlet as well to keep your lighting display balanced. If you need to run power from inside, you can prevent accidents by using a ground fault interrupter and an outdoor extension cord. (Note: Duradek has a class A fire rating, has been thoroughly tested and is approved as a safe product for your home).
If you live in an apartment or townhouse community, check if your complex has rules or restrictions regarding outdoor displays.
Both types of Christmas trees may be trimmed with lights, ornaments, tinsels, ribbons, and a tree topper; just make sure to choose sturdy decorations that can withstand the elements if you do not have an enclosed balcony.

It just takes a little time and creativity to make your deck or balcony stand out and bring a little holiday joy to everyone around.
Assess the Space
Decorating your porch or balcony starts with knowing your space. Whether you are working with a small front porch or an expansive deck, by measuring the available space you will know exactly how much room you have to work with. You will avoid buying more decorations than will fit in your space or alternately have a too small display that looks like you only partially decorated.Taking note of available electrical outlets or sources is also important so you know whatever length of lighting you buy for your perimeter, that there is enough length to reach the outlet as well to keep your lighting display balanced.
Theme
Choosing a theme can be a great idea to make your display stand out, especially if you want the decorations to look unified and put-together. For example, you can choose traditional holiday colors like red, green, blue, and silver, or plan your decorations around Christmas themes like candy canes, angels, and snowflakes.Christmas Trees
Setting up a Christmas tree on your porch or balcony can warm even the coldest of hearts. While the smell of real pine and fir appeals to many people, putting up an artificial Christmas tree is the better choice in extreme climates where cut trees decay faster. Even better, you can keep reusing a fake tree for many holiday seasons to come, making it the more eco-friendly and cost-effective choice. Plus with an artificial tree you don’t have to worry about any sap making it to your deck surface, which can be difficult to clean. (Note: Duradek is an easy to clean surface, but a few things like sap and rust can difficult to remove and you will want to protect your surface from that. If your tree holder is metal, you might want to place a protective liner between the tree holder and the vinyl surface). Both types of Christmas trees may be trimmed with lights, ornaments, tinsels, ribbons, and a tree topper; just make sure to choose sturdy decorations that can withstand the elements if you do not have an enclosed balcony.
Christmas Lights
Stringing outdoor Christmas lights on your porch or balcony is a sure-fire way to make your home look festive and merry. If you already have trees or shrubs lining it, consider stringing the lights around the pots and branches; if not, string them around the bannisters or railings instead. Make sure that you use Christmas lights that are specifically labeled "outdoor only," especially if you live in places with extreme cold. While some people go for incandescent lights for the authentic look, others prefer LED lights because of their cost efficiency and durability.Wreaths
Hanging wreaths can inexpensively dress up a dreary-looking porch or balcony during the holiday season. You can decorate your balcony with multiple wreaths, or place one in the middle for a beautiful, simple effect. If you want the smell of evergreen boughs, go with natural wreaths, but if you do not like the hassle of cleaning needles, choose artificial wreaths instead. With artificial wreaths you have the added benefit of reusing them year after year.Christmas Inflatables
Placing air-blown Christmas inflatables on your porch or balcony lets people know that you enjoy and celebrate the holidays just as much as they do. You can choose from Santas, reindeers, snowmen, candy canes, elves and other inflatables. When selecting an inflatable, make sure its size is proportional to the available space on your balcony. Putting out too many inflatables can overcrowd a small balcony and take away from the effect you want.Festive Ribbons
Another affordable way to get into the holiday spirit is to trim the bannisters with festive outdoor Christmas bows. People who like subtle and sophisticated Christmas decor often go for this type of holiday flourish. Holiday traditionalists can opt for the red velvet bows, while those who want their decorations to sparkle during the day and light up at night can go for holographic bows instead.General Tips
With all of these great ideas, you are well on your way to a gorgeous Christmas display on your porch. With a Duradek protected deck, just remember a few simple things:- When clearing snow and ice from you deck, be sure to use a snow shovel with a plastic edge, and if you use de-icing agents, remember to clean your deck off well before spring.
- If your displays have sharp edges anywhere at the base, be sure not to drag them across your vinyl deck surface.
- Make use of the storage space below. If there is empty space below your porch or deck, your Duradek vinyl waterproof surface keeps the area below dry. If it is enclosed from view, it is a great place to store the containers your outdoor season displays are kept it for easy access.
Have a great holiday season and enjoy decorating your deck or balcony! For all of you with a Duradek deck, we invite you to send us photos of your beautiful Christmas displays or sparkling, snow-covered Duradek decks.

Grey is the New Black and Other Residential Trends from 2014
Residential trends for 2014 continued to show that the demand for outdoor living space is on the rise as it has been for the last few years with the housing market's slow but steady incline of recovery.
A survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) showed a 97.7% popularity rating for terraces, patios and decks. This survey details a wide range of outdoor living trends but the general consensus was that people want low-maintenance design suited for entertainment and relaxation. People simply want more time to enjoy their outdoor living space and less time maintaining it.
Here's a look at some of the top trends in outdoor living space features in 2014.
The sleek, contemporary look of black residential design that featured prominently the last few years has given way to softer and more versatile greys. With homeowners embracing extending their every-day living space outwards, this residential colour trend extended to outdoor living space as well.
Professional Builder Magazine shows off Duradek’s contribution to this trend with our latest color ‘Graphite’ from the ‘Ultra Cork’ line of waterproof vinyl. The beauty of Duradek is not just that it gives your deck an attractive surface, but it also provides warrantied, roof-grade waterproof protection.
Size and Shape is Right Out of the Box
The traditional 10 x 20 foot rectangular decks have given way to expansive deck and patio areas in a variety of shapes and sizes. While the average size of decks seems to be increasing, the trend is towards multi-level structures with unique shapes that can flow and carry the design of the house out and into the landscaping.
Sustainability – Eco Friendly Design Practices
People want something cost effective, but they also want to act in environmentally conscious ways that minimize the impact on the environment at both the point of installation and with maintenance and long-term sustainability. It may surprise you that pvc membranes are considered 'green due to their long lifecycle. The fact that PVC membranes are installed on non-treated wood also contributes to their limited environmental impact as opposed to treated wood which eventually ends up leaching chemicals into the landfills.
Lighting
Outdoor lighting shone brightly in 2014, particularly with creative uses. Cleverly designed lighting systems worked into ornamental post caps, decorative balusters and outdoor furniture were significant additions to design features in outdoor living space. From expensive built-in lighting to unique, simple lights strung above a deck have replaced the old patio lantern strings and are a simple way to update your outdoor design.
Seating and Dining Areas
Not a new trend, but more popular than ever, lounging and dining areas have taken on new forms as built-in seating is incorporated into deck designs. Bigger deck space with distinct shapes or levels have opened the way for separate dining and lounging areas.
Customization Outdoor living areas, like a home's interiors, are a unique expression of their character and preferences. Pergolas, walls, functional areas, planter' boxes, storage and accessories are all ways in which homeowners expressed that individuality in 2014. Functional design is key! Creative Outdoor Storage Space Waterproofed with Duradek.
Outdoor Kitchens Beyond the basic grill, complete outdoor kitchens with cooking surfaces, sinks, fridges and yes, grills are carrying on from 2013 trends and are an example of how home owners are extending their day-to-day living outdoors.
Fire Features Whether it is a small, lantern style accent, set within a pond, or completely built into a full exterior wall; fire features are incredibly popular and with many options available, there is a fire feature in virtually an size and shape you desire.
The First and most important part of creating functional outdoor living space to meet your specific lifestyle needs is to create a safe, waterproof outdoor surface.
A properly built structure that has reliable waterproof protection means that you will have a deck you can rely on for decades.
But remember, deck waterproofing is a specialized trade. To start with a good foundation, a great way to start is to talk to your local Duradek expert.

Duradek president John Ogilvie is often turned to for advice on deck waterproofing.
Since Duradek is the original sheet vinyl membrane used for deck waterproofing and John Ogilvie pioneered its use over habitable space as a true roofing membrane, it is no surprise that even the experts turn to Duradek for best practices and advice.
This fall's issue of Waterproof Magazine features an article titled, "Dealing with Moisture on Lightweight Decks" and is a good example of how often Duradek is used as a proven successful deck waterproofing solution, even when compared to similar waterproofing products.

Duradek Named in Top 100 New Products for 2014
Once again Duradek has been selected as one of Professional Builder magazine's Top 100 New Building Products. This 2014 recognition is based on inquires from Professional Builder magazine readers on Duradek's latest addition to the popular 'Cork' line of waterproof vinyl membrane - Duradek Ultra Cork Graphite.
Graphite was introduced following the success of the 3 existing colours in the versatile and stylish designer pattern of the Ultra Cork line.
The flagship color for this exclusive line was launched in the summer of 2008 and was originally simply named Duradek Ultra Cork. After seeing how well received the attractive pattern was, 'Cork' became the design for a whole new line with the original shade being called ‘Natural', followed in late 2011 with Duradek Ultra Cork ‘Espresso’ and ‘Macchiato’. These warm tones were a huge success and bring a significant element of style to balconies, sun decks and roof decks; often paired with the sophisticated and attractive Panorama Post Topless Glass Railing System.
Duradek’s intent is to provide tasteful, low-maintenance outdoor living space that can compliment a variety of exterior color schemes with naturally inspired colors and textures while still benefiting from guaranteed roof-grade waterproof protection. This goal was once again achieved with the addition of Graphite as it satisfies the need for a vinyl option in the cool tones of various shades of grey that harmonizes with the exterior color schemes not well suited for the warmer ‘coffee’ tones of the existing Cork line.
Cork Graphite has all of the strength, durability and waterproofing performance that Duradek has earned a reputation for over the last 40 years, but there is one thing that makes Graphite a unique colour option from the rest of over 20 colour choices. For the first time in Duradek’s history, the company held a contest open to the public to ‘Name the New Color’. With a diverse and impressive array of submissions from coast to coast, the winner by overwhelming opinion was Graphite.
Duradek would like to thank Professional Builder magazine and its readers for making Graphite one of the top 100 new products for 2014 and for once again acknowledging Duradek’s leadership in outdoor flooring. Exclusively installed by specially trained professionals, Duradek continues to be the vinyl that sets the bar for waterproof roofing membranes.
After 40 years of providing reliable, low maintenance, stylish solutions for outdoor living space, we are proud to be the brand that people trust. Remember, all Duradek is a reliable vinyl deck membrane...but not all vinyl deck membranes are Duradek!
Be sure to use the original Duradek on your decking projects! The only way to do that is to contact an authorized and trained Duradek installer. So when you are getting quotes, make sure you are asking if it is the Duradek brand of vinyl. While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, we encourage you to not be fooled by imitation and insist on getting THE Duradek vinyl...not a vinyl that is 'just like Duradek'.

Overload of Options Cloud Deck Reno Decisions
When looking at deck building options, there are so many new products available that it can be a challenge to make the decision on what type of deck you should go with, let alone what supplier to choose. When you are planning your decking project, it is a good idea to be aware of what the options are, but don’t let the excitement of possibilities become the major influence on your decision over what it is you really want from your deck.
While not a new product in the marketplace, Duradek may be the proverbial ‘forest that you can’t see for the trees’ and provide the ideal decking solution you are looking for amidst the maze of options.
As Andrew Wormer, editor of Professional Deck Builder magazine said about composite decking in his article ‘Too Many Choices?’ after his visit to last year’s Deck Expo, there are “enough variations and new color options to give lumberyard owners nightmares.” This massive selection means most buyers will never even see the full collection of what is available because no one supplier can possibly stock all of the available options. And that is just the composite board category!

Even with traditional wood decks there are more choices than ever before. At one time, only 2 or 3 species of wood was available for deck building, but today there is a myriad of choices between treated or untreated wood in various grades as well as a variety of imported hardwood varieties.
The railing category also has more options than ever before as well. Mr. Wormer mentions that in 2006 the ratio of decking to railing products for the average building products distributor was 80/20. In 2013 that ratio is 60/40.

Durarail powder coated aluminum railing and fencing systems
are the perfect complement to Duradek to match its durability and low maintenance performance. No rust, no sanding, no staining…ever! |
So given all these choices, how do you know what is the best option for your deck building or renovating project? Before even looking at budgetary considerations, first really give some thought to what you want from your deck to help you qualify the options along the way through your decision making process.
Some Practical Questions to Ask Yourself about Your Decking Needs
Do you prefer to use your deck throughout the year as much as possible or do you only use your deck seasonally?
- Decks protected with Duradek vinyl membranes withstand all types of climatic conditions and have been successfully installed throughout North America over the past 40 years.
Do you have or prefer a roof deck, an elevated deck or a ground level patio?
- Duradek can be applied on untreated plywood, concrete or coated surfaces and is ideal for all outdoor living surfaces from patios to pool surrounds.
Do you have need of or use for covered outdoor living space?
- When applied to a second level deck, Duradek provides a dry area for a covered patio below that can be used all year round. Since Duradek is a roofing membrane, rain does not have to stop you from barbecuing and your family members or guests who smoke will always have a dry place to take their habit outside.
Do you have need of or use for dry outdoor storage space?
-
As a roofing membrane, Duradek on a second level deck provides a dry area below for storage of lawnmowers, barbecues and other outdoor items you’d like to protect from the elements.

What is needed to maintain your deck?
- When Duradek is installed, it is warranted for 10-years of waterproof protection but often has a life expectancy that far exceeds that….and requires no maintenance. Duradek is installed in a single-ply, one-time application and will only need a seasonal cleaning to stay looking good. No sanding, staining or re-coating required….ever!

Now compare prices….
Remember, when looking at the cost; be sure to consider the overall lifespan of the deck and the maintenance costs required throughout that time. That is where many home owners wish they had spent a little more at the deck construction phase to get the most longevity from their deck without the need for ongoing maintenance or repairs. It is amazing how often a home owner’s frustration at deck repairs could have been avoided by authorizing the use of recommended waterproofing details like drains, scuppers and perimeter flashing. It equates to only a small amount of the overall cost, but can extend the longevity of the deck greatly.
Duradek installers run into this problem frequently. As Winnipeg’s Duradek distributor, Mel Dueck from Windeck says, “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of the cheap price is forgotten.” (Learn more about Windeck – Winnipeg Patios and Decks on YouTube).
Also, when looking at prices, be sure to compare installed costs. Where sometimes the material cost may be lower, the labor required for installation more than offsets the material savings.
Making the Decision on Your Deck
Remember, when choosing a building product, new does not always mean better. The most important thing to consider is what you want from your deck. In most cases, that can be summed up as outdoor living space for leisure that you spend more time enjoying than maintaining. If you’d like to get some details on how Duradek can bring what you need to your decking project, contact a trained and authorized Duradek applicator in your area for a free estimate.
