Party on the Patio Safely - Do it With Duradek

Summer is officially here! And one of the best parts of summer is enjoying your balconies, decks and patios in the fantastic summer weather. It doesn't seem to matter if you prefer a quite lounge with a good book or if you enjoy a lively social barbecue; your outdoor living space is the ideal place to be for the next few months. Duradek wants to make sure all the memories you create on your deck are good ones.

Duradek Ultra Supreme Chip Vinyl Deck and Durarail Railings
Coastal decks constantly exposed
to moisture are most vulnerable
to weakening due to improper
waterproofing. With Duradek,
protection is guaranteed.
With the growing trend of your outdoor living space being an extension of your home, at any time of year balconies and decks are the most popular places for people to congregate, but particularly during the summer months. Can your deck handle the load?

This is particularly important to consider if you live in a coastal region where moisture can deteriorate your deck's integrity if not properly waterproofed. One of the most tragic elements of deck collapse stories is that usually they can be avoided by proper deck maintenance and common sense, but in some instances, neither is present and the price is paid with person injury (and sometimes resulting litigation).

Take for example, a spring-break celebration where several college students suffered from injuries resulting from a deck collapse at a beach house party. A combination of aging and deteriorating wood and over-loaded weight was likely the main contributors to the collapse.

But a group of crazy college kids partying on a balcony is not the only time a deck is at risk of collapsing. In Birmingham, a church luncheon on a residential deck also resulted in a collapse and personal injury.

If you are aware of deck safety concerns, you have probably already performed your annual deck inspection as recommended by the North America Deck and Rail Association (NADRA). If deck safety is something you haven't considered, think about this...according to NADRA there are approximately 40 million decks in North America that are over 20 years old. Most of those decks aren't built to today's building code standards, and combined with aging factors and possible water damage weakening the structure, deck safety may be a topic you want to consider.

If you are questioning the safety or stability of your deck, have a qualified decking professional like a Duradek trained waterproofing specialist come take a look at your deck. You can request a free estimate on ensuring your deck is stable and protected with Duradek, the original vinyl deck waterproofing membrane.

Duradek Contributes to 6 out of 15 Top Design Trends in Single Family Homes

Custom Home Magazine shared the Top 15 Design Trends in Single Family Living from Builder 2013, and Duradek can contribute to 6 out of these top 15 Trends. According to a recent AIA Design Trends Survey, these are the most in-demand trends in single family homes that are expected to carry forward.

Smaller Homes

There is a growing interest in smaller home and architects are noting the increased demand. While this may reduce the environmental foot print of each home, the home owners do not have to sacrifice lifestyle features such as decks. While the trend of smaller homes does not support extended balconies, a space efficient roof top deck certainly makes excellent use of space without sacrificing the benefit of personal outdoor living space. This home outside of Atlanta is an excellent example of how Duradek’s ICC approved walkable roofing membrane could help to maximize space in a vertical building plan.

Private Outdoor Spaces

From first homes to retirement homes, people want to have a low maintenance, outdoor living space where they can entertain without their neighbors watching. While it is widely recognized that Duradek vinyl offers one of the best low maintenance deck surfaces available, Durarail brings privacy protection into the equation with several different options including the Panorama Post topless glass system. View-through glass for the view and frosted glass for privacy makes it easy for you to customize your outdoor entertaining areas and without feeling like you are on display for your neighborhood.

railing with privacy protection.

Better Indoor Outdoor Connectivity

Duradek believes that your deck is an extension of your home and your outdoor living space is an important part of your domestic quality of life. You probably won’t notice the detailed waterproofing features at the door thresholds that protect your home from the elements, but you will notice how beautifully Duradek patterns and colors blend with the rest of the design of your home, like this beautiful home with a natural cork floor in the interior and Duradek Cork Natural vinyl on the sundeck.

Covered Outdoor Rooms

Covered outdoor rooms allow the advantage of enjoying your outdoor living space without being concerned about what the weather is going to do and Duradek is the perfect product for turning a 2nd level deck into the roof for a covered patio or room below. With ICC approved roof grade waterproof protection, Duradek is both your roofing membrane and walking surface in one single ply application.

Personalization

With the desire for personalization and individual preferences, many home owners want something a little different than everybody else. Duradek vinyl can be applied to create a unique look and style with borders or insets with complimentary or contrasting colors to suit your individual tastes.

Contrasting border colors bring a unique look.

Custom cuts and careful welding allows Duradek to
bring unique features to your deck.

Storage

It seems there is just never enough storage space, and reportedly 79% of home buyers want more storage than the builders are providing. So what is the solution without sacrificing any other valuable living space? Duradek can turn outdoor spaces into fully waterproofed storage areas. While a simple two-level deck protected with Duradek keeps some dry area below for outdoor items, the open sides do allow moisture. For a more protected outdoor storage space, simply enclosing an area that is waterproofed with Duradek above creates that additional storage which can be completely water-tight for even more security for your belongings without sacrificing the space inside the home like this effective space-saving under-stair solution.

What is the Cost of Duradek Vinyl Decking?

One of the first questions asked about Duradek vinyl decking is “What does Duradek cost?” Like many home renovation projects, the cost of installing Duradek is dependent on several factors.

The overall cost depends on:

Your location: While Duradek is housed in multiple warehouse locations in Canada and the United States, the distance and thus the shipping costs for each Duradek Dealer will be slightly different and will affect the material cost.

Your local labour rates: Duradek is installed only by trained contractors and each contractor’s labor costs can vary based on a variety of factors.

Your local insurance rates: This highly fluctuating pricing factor will vary by region as well.

Your project needs: Each project must be looked at individually to provide a relevant estimate. For a new building project where the deck has been built specifically for the application of Duradek and is prepared as recommended, the labor will be much less than if previous deck material needs to be removed or if the substrate needs to be prepared before Duradek can be applied. All project details need to be looked at such as posts, penetrations, perimeter trims, drains and any other job specific details.

For a realistic estimate, your local installer can provide a free quote. Follow this link to find a dealer in your area.

What You Get For the Cost

The real cost should provide a job that is complete, including a solid structure and substrate, and a walkable, waterproof surface.

The benefits in that cost include:

Warranty: When you choose Duradek Ultra, your PVC membrane is guaranteed to be free from manufacturing defects that could compromise your waterproofing. You can trust that the product will perform its function for at least 10 years. Your installer will also offer an independent workmanship warranty.

Life Expectancy: While Duradek is warrantied for 10 years, its life expectancy exceeds that significantly. You can expect your Duradek to perform 15 to 20 years and beyond. Many homeowners who have decks protected with Duradek choose to replace it at the 15 to 20 year age more to update the look of their home than for any waterproofing performance issues.

A Duradek Training Session
Duradek Training Session.
Trained Applicators: With Duradek being available only through trained and authorized applicators, you can be confident that your vinyl installer has been instructed in the specific details involved in PVC application and waterproofing. In addition, if your particular decking project has unique factors or details that do not allow recommended installation methods, Duradek trained installers have access to Duradek’s technical support for specific inquiries and recommendations.

Hidden water damage makes
for costly repairs.
Water Protection: You can be confident your deck is totally waterproofed and protected, and it is important to be aware of how your deck waterproofing affects the whole building envelope of your home. In the case of multi-residential buildings, one improperly waterproofed deck can affect multiple residences. When faced with this situation, the minimal savings from choosing an alternate, less reliable method of waterproofing is certainly not worth the cost of repairs due to water damage.
While the importance of roof grade waterproofing is obvious for roof top decks, all decks and balconies if improperly waterproofed can allow water to seep into your home, subtly and silently weakening the structure with wood rot.

Graphite is the latest color
in the Duradek 'Cork' line.
Style: Deck vinyl comes in all sorts of colors and patterns and Duradek is proud to offer a great
selection. From traditional favorites to hot, new contemporary patterns and colors, Duradek has a vinyl that will complement the exterior design of any home.

Lifestyle: PVCs one-time application allows you to spend your time enjoying your deck, not laboring on it. A truly low-maintenance product, there is no sanding, staining or reapplication required. Just a seasonal cleaning and annual inspection is all that you will need to do to keep your deck in top shape.

A happy Duradek customer
who's waterproofing problems
were solved once and for all.
Peace of mind: Besides the fact that Duradek is a ‘green’ product, knowing that your deck is finished with a beautiful, easy to clean surface that is warrantied for waterproofing performance year after year is the kind of benefit that is hard to put a price on! Just ask the homeowners who have repeatedly tried other options before turning to Duradek to solve their deck waterproofing problems for good.

Check out this happy homeowner’s story and see why it makes sense to do it right the first time – do it with Duradek.

Top 10 Questions to Ask About Your Deck Building Product Warranty

When choosing a deck building product, the warranty is something that most people will at least consider as an element in their decision making process. Most respected manufacturers stand behind their product and are willing to provide a warranty with new purchases. But what does that warranty really guarantee?

Here are a few key questions you should be asking about warranties when you are selecting your decking products:

#1 – How long is the warranty valid?

Duradek Warranty page 1This is a no-brainer for most people and the automatic first question, however depending on your circumstances; you might want to get a few more details. Is the warranty valid from purchase date or installation date? While usually there is not much of a difference, in some large projects where a missing permit can delay completion by months, this may be something to be aware of.

Duradek’s warranty on our Ultra PVC Membranes is 10 years for leaking due to a manufacturing defect and is valid from the date of installation (reportedly, many homeowners are enjoying the product for twice as long).

#2 – What does the warranty cover?

With building products, it is not unusual for the function of an item and its appearance to be considered separately. It is important to be aware if your warranty covers the integrity of the product only, or if it covers appearance (see item #3) and how well the product performs (see item #4).

Duradek’s warranty offers independent terms for appearance and workmanship.

#3 – Does the product have a separate appearance warranty; and if so, does it have the same terms as the product’s performance warranty?

Often with building products, the warranty does not include aesthetics and only honors performance. If there is an appearance warranty, it is not necessarily for the same duration as the performance guarantee. For example, the image below shows the result of accelerated weather testing of a decking membrane that has been promoting their new coating tested side by side with Duradek Ultra Cork.

Obviously, if this deck material had been installed on your home and turned this dark over time from natural sunlight as the testing emulated, you would want it to be replaced. As far as our research shows, this particular manufacturer does not offer an appearance warranty at all, and you may find yourself in a long debate or simply replacing the product entirely at your cost.

Duradek’s warranty terms include a 5-year warranty on the product’s appearance for our 60 mil Ultra vinyl.

#4 – Is there a separate workmanship warranty?

While a product can be tested for performance in a number of ways, the truest test of all is its success in its intended application. When it comes to waterproofing, no matter how great a product is, if it is not installed with consideration to all of the intricate details involved in proper waterproofing techniques, it is very difficult to guarantee performance.

Duradek is installed only by trained and authorized installers who have completed Duradek’s training in proper waterproofing details and have access to Duradek’s technical staff for support if needed. In addition to the product and appearance warranty offered by the Manufacturer, Duradek installers offer their own separate Workmanship Warranty .While Duradek ensures all installers are skilled in the proper application of PVC membranes, it is still important to check references and past projects when selecting your contractor.

#5 – Is the warranty transferable?

Whether new home developments or renovations in existing homes, often the owner of a property is not the same individual who purchased the building product used if and when it comes time to inquire about a warranty claim.

Duradek warranties are transferable when ownership of the property changes.

#6 – How long has the manufacturer been in business? Has the product or manufacturer been around long enough to have gone through a warranty cycle?

This is a surprisingly important question to ask. Sometimes if the manufacturer of a product has had a change in ownership, the warranty terms offered through the previous owner is not legally binding to the new owner, even if the product in question retains the same brand name. This issue of manufacturer warranties far exceeding proven lifecycles has come up with new product innovations that have not fully matured through their infancy stage such as some composite decking products.

Duradek has been waterproofing decks and balconies since 1974 which is several warranty cycles, and our PVC membranes have been produced consistently by the same North American manufacturer.

#7 – What are your maintenance responsibilities?

If there is an element of product maintenance required, as a homeowner you may inadvertently nullify your warranty if you have not performed the maintenance recommendations as instructed by the product manufacturer. If there are maintenance requirements, most times they will be indicated on your products’ written warranty.

Duradek is a low maintenance product, but does require care and cleaning. We recommend 4 times a year which makes for an easy-to-remember seasonal schedule. The only other responsibility from the homeowner is an annual inspection to ensure all caulking around posts, pillars, vents and drains is intact and maintaining your deck’s waterproof seal.

#8 – Are there limitations or restrictions to the product’s warranty?

Does the manufacturer limit the warranty to everything imaginable so that you aren’t really getting a warranty worth the paper it is printed on? Phrases that include “subject to”, “with the exception of”, “when used with” or “in the event of” should be read very carefully as you might find yourself in a circle of restrictions that make a warranty claim virtually impossible. Sometimes you may even see the same warranty present contradictory phrases where the “limited to” and “including but not limited to” clauses leave you scratching your head on what the manufacturer is willing to guarantee. While most warranties will not cover damages resulting from improper maintenance or Acts of God, make sure you are getting one that actually backs up the product’s performance.

Duradek Ultra is a proven, reliable product and the Duradek warranty backs that up. While there are certainly realistic limitations as with any warranty, Duradek lays them out in a straight forward manner so that homeowners with a Duradek vinyl deck know what the product expectations are, what the installing contractor is responsible for and what the homeowner’s responsibilities are.

#9– Do you need to provide proof of purchase?

For the most expedient service when initiating a warranty claim on any purchase, it is very helpful to have your original purchase receipt and hard copy of your written warranty, and in some cases this is the only way to proceed with a warranty claim should you experience issues with the product. As a homeowner, you should be asking for your warranty and purchase receipt when the project is completed to your satisfaction and you are providing payment.

If there happened to be an instance where you would want to submit a warranty claim on your Duradek vinyl, you would be required to show proof of purchase. Be sure to get your warranty record and receipt from your contractor.

#10 – Did you get the product you were quoted on?

While we like to think we are all being treated fairly, occasionally it happens, whether from misunderstanding or deceit, that you do not always get what you are ask for. With products like Duradek, the brand name is often used synonymously for any PVC membrane, but all vinyl is not created equal.

If you have requested Duradek because of its sound reputation and performance history, be sure that is what your contractor is actually installing. There are some contractors out there that will quote ‘Duradek’ on your initial estimate, but may install an alternate vinyl product. Make sure you look for the “Duradek’ stamp on the product you choose, and the best way to ensure this is to select one of Duradek’s authorized dealers.

We hope that you find these warranty insights helpful, but that you never have to go through the process of your right to demand that product performance promises are honored. And with a product that frequently lasts at least twice as long as its warranty terms, you are very unlikely to ever have to pull your warranty card and receipt for your Duradek.

Some of the points covered in the radio interview included:
  • Best uses for Duradek – ideal use as a walkable roofing membrane for use on decks over living space.
