There’s no more denying it. The days are shorter. The temperature is colder. Winter is on its way.
If you’ve got a covered deck, you might use it all year round, but decks exposed to the rain and snow tend to get neglected through the winter months.
There’s a few things you can do to keep your vinyl sundeck in top shape to survive the harsher winter weather and be ready for a simple cleaning come spring.
#1 – First, if you have not already done so, pack away any seasonal furniture or planters stored on your deck. When you are not using your deck frequently, you may not notice the debris or dirt that can accumulate around the edges of temporary furniture or fixtures of your deck, making for a tougher scrubbing in the spring.
#2 – Clear any organic debris that has accumulated. If you are lucky enough to have a lot of trees around your deck, that good fortune is often is accompanied by leaves and twigs that autumn weather can send to your deck in wet, mucky piles. Be sure to remove organic matter before it starts to decompose as this can lead to stains on your vinyl deck that can be difficult to remove.
#3 – Wash your deck with a mild cleaner and rinse thoroughly. While it is easy to brush this one off the list until spring, you can make your spring clean a little easier if you perform once before winter. You can use a vinyl deck cleaner for a gentle clean but if you would like to substitute for a more common household cleaner we have found that diluted Cascade powdered dish detergent works well also. Simply scrub with a soft bristled brush or broom. No matter what product you use to clean, make sure it is safe for use on vinyl and be sure to rinse well so there is no chemical residue remaining.
Now your deck is ready for winter, and probably looks so great that you will still want to use it every chance you get.
If you do access your vinyl deck through the winter months, have some rock salt or other snow melting chemicals on hand to deal with slippery ice and snow. Just remember that as soon as the spring weather arrives, you must rinse those chemicals off your deck to get keep your vinyl from premature aging.
Depending on the amount of snow accumulation you get, you may also want to be sure to have a plastic edged snow shovel on hand. Avoid the use of metal edged shovels on your vinyl deck so there is no chance of puncturing the membrane.
If you have been considering a deck renovation, don’t wait until spring or summer when deck builders are at their busiest. Start the conversation now to get an estimate on your decking project.
In many areas, Duradek installers can take care of re-surfacing your deck with Duradek vinyl all year round.
Duradek installers are a very talented and creative bunch of contractors. Communicate with your Duradek contractor and don’t be afraid to ask him to make use of any scrap bits of left over vinyl (if there are any). Little, left-over vinyl remnants work well to place under metal planters to stop rust from developing on your permanent deck; and creative uses like this mini snow slide protects the landing of a patio stairway from snow accumulation.
In the fall and winter months, deck contractors have a little more time than they do in the summer to accommodate extra requests.

Happy Vinyl Decking Customer Shares Story with Duradek
There is nothing more important to any business than a happy customer.
At Duradek, we take pride in the excellent quality of our deck vinyl; and that we have built a brand reputation so reliable that “Duradek” is often used synonymously to describe all vinyl decking.
We also know that no matter how good a vinyl decking product is manufactured, it must be installed with the expertise of a skilled professional trained in the specific details required for effective deck waterproofing to be completely reliable. A unique combination of deck building, roofing and floor laying skills all contribute to the professional installation techniques of a Duradek installer.
It is this combination of a superior product and professional installation that keeps Duradek the leading brand of vinyl decking in North America.
Below is an unedited letter from a recent Duradek customer that details how an unsatisfactory past experience with his deck was able to be turned around when he contacted Duradek. It is summed up nicely with the statement, “The deck is finished and it looks really awesome and I am extremely happy.”, but his story below will tell you why….
Back in 2014 I contacted your head office and asked for a dealer or installer in my area. I reside in North Bay ON. I was given the name of a Mr. Jim Simpson (at Raildek in Ontario), and this raildekoffice@gmail.com as his e-mail address. I then contacted Mr. Simpson, who sent me to a Mr. Pete Larocque of Deck World North.
Short history, I had a really nice deck built or so I thought, less than 2 years and it was leaking and ruining my house. The other company would not honour their warranty because it was not installed by one of their people, but I bought the product from a store that they sell it at and installed by a person highly recommended by that store. The deck project, which he promised, would be 3 weeks took 15 weeks to finish. First spring it leaked worse than a sieve. So I am somewhat jaded towards contractors. So I called the head office in BC to get a local contractor and that is how I ended up dealing with Mr. Larocque.
My next and natural question is where do you find these people that you employ and take the time to train into representing your company, they wear your logo on their clothing, they have the logo on their vehicles.
I knew things were not the same as with the other contractor when your people showed up on the correct day, at the correct time and with all their supplies. They also put in a very full long day of work. They did not let a sudden and cold shower slow them down. The second day once again at the correct time and they did a full days work. Third day dawned and they were once more on time, I was impressed. The third day was actually a short day. The deck is finished and it looks really awesome and I am extremely happy.
I was somewhat not happy that Mr. Larocque would not let me help and he kept me sitting down. I was not even allowed to tidy up my own deck. He and his partner, Marcel did everything. They both kept telling me to go and watch TV. They left and there was no clean up to do, all the trash and such were removed from the site.
People are quick to call to complain but few are willing to take the time to send a note and say how happy they are with the results of the people employed by anyone, but you folks at Dura Deck should be extremely proud of the way they represent your company by doing an exceptional job, which they did and this will do nothing short to ensure that the reputation of Dura Deck is maintained and broadened. I want to thank Pete and Marcel for going above and beyond the scope of their work and making my deck another room in the house and for their prompt and excellent work. Even if they did not let me do anything.
Mr. Andy R

Vinyl Deck – Elasticity vs. Breaking Strength
A good roofing membrane has to be strong enough to withstand stresses and flexible enough to accommodate deck movement.
When you are comparing the properties of vinyl deck membrane options for your deck, you may encounter claims that one vinyl’s ‘Breaking Strength’ is greater than another, followed by claims that a higher rating on Breaking Strength makes it a better option.
Breaking Strength and Elasticity (also called Elongation to Break) are both measured by a tensile testing machine, which pulls a rectangular piece of the vinyl membrane at a constant rate. Breaking strength is the stress needed to break a sample. The elongation-to-break is the strain on a sample when it breaks.
We propose the more important of the 2 tests is Elasticity.
Duradek meets all Breaking Strength and Elongation requirements - it is this elasticity that allows Duradek to perform its waterproofing function for so long (we've seen evidence of our membrane still performing after more than 30 years!...see video below).
Elasticity in a vinyl deck membrane is extremely important.
Imagine your deck as it expands and contracts throughout the seasons as the temperatures change year after year. The deck will be moving and since the membrane is fully adhered, it needs to be able to move with the deck. That requires elasticity, not breaking strength.
So don’t be led to believe that just because one product’s ‘Breaking Strength’ is rated greater than another’s, that that means it is better suited for protecting your deck.
For a great demonstration of elasticity, we love this video from Duradek of Utah that was created to demonstrate Duradek vinyl’s excellent seam strength by towing a Ford F250 truck. This amazing visual shows not only the strength of Duradek’s heat welded seams, but also clearly shows the excellent degree of elasticity in the membrane which is far more than will ever be needed by climate expansion and contraction issues.
When you are selecting a vinyl deck membrane, trust the proven performance of Duradek. Installed only by trained contractors, Duradek makes sure your deck waterproofing performs as intended.
Look for a Duradek installer in your area to discuss your decking project.

Deck Love in the Summer Leads to Makeover Plans
Ah, the bliss of summer deck love! We are right in the middle of the Dog Days of Summer (marked by the Old Farmer’s Almanac as the 40 days beginning July 3rd through August 11th) and for many of us, there is no place we'd rather be than on our decks; or the deck of our favourite restaurants, pubs, or friends.
As you are circulating decks this season, take note of what you like about the decks you visit. There are more decking options, furniture and accessories available today than ever, so what a great time for a deck makeover!
Deck Love is a Long Term Commitment – Outdoor living space has become a favorite part of the home for many North Americans. The old style of constructing decks to a 10 foot by 20 foot single surface has been replaced by a growing number of expansive decks.
The best way to increase your outdoor living space is by using your second level deck as a roof for a deck area below. Deck waterproofing specialists like our Duradek trained applicators can provide a roof-grade deck surface on your upper level deck, enabling you to double your useable space with a protected lower level deck below.
This gives you the advantages of catching as much sun as you can on the top level AND protecting you with some shaded area below when you need it. Plus, let's face it, your deck is not a summer romance. You LOVE your deck and want to use it all year, and when you have protection from above that is possible.
Get Creative With Railings – There are many styles of railings available for defining your outdoor living space. There are traditional picket railings made with powder coated aluminum that can provide the classic look of wrought iron without the need for maintenance, or you can choose glass railings, topless glass railings or stainless steel cable railings in some areas.
Go one step further and combine any of the above options for a completely unique look. Durarail powder coated aluminum railings allow for standard or custom designs, and incorporating unique features can provide the best of design and functionality for your individualized deck.
The Shape of Things to Come – There is no need to be stuck in same old rectangular shaped deck with today’s decking options.
Choose octagonal, oval or multiple curves to create a unique shape that brings an element of contemporary style to the traditional feature of a deck.
Innovative new railing products like Durarail’s Panorama Universal Post that allows you to define a curved deck with a topless glass railing system that virtually “bends” around corners gives you almost limitless design options!
Multi-Level Decks – Decking trends like outdoor kitchens, permanent (as opposed to seasonal) outdoor furniture and fire features contribute to the use of outdoor living space being used as often as any other room in your home.
Incorporating multiple levels to your deck with distinct separation allows you to treat each level of your deck like a separate room. While your outdoor kitchen is on one level, your lounging area can be another and your spa is on yet another…the possibilities are endless based on your favorite leisure activities.
When your deck surface is protected with Duradek vinyl, the area below is kept dry; and even if a lower level of your deck is only elevated a couple of feet, that provides some great dry storage for gardening supplies, camping gear or other outdoor toys.
Want to show your deck a little love? Contact one of our Duradek installers to discuss your deck make-over options.

Debunking the Vinyl Decking 'Rip Test'
You may encounter some competing vinyl manufacturers performing some demonstrative parlor tricks intended to lead you to believe that one vinyl product is better than another, but we encourage you to see past the flim-flam and look at what is actually important in evaluating a deck vinyl.
Vinyl decking is FULLY adhered to a solid surface, so to be able to take a loose piece off of your deck and tear it is just not realistic at all.
Would that mean it makes sense to show that the thin layers of wood veneer that make up plywood can be torn in half independently, and then claim that makes plywood a product that does not pass the ‘rip test’?
Or does a fabric bandage that can be torn before being applied mean that it does not pass the ‘rip test’ and therefore not suitable to cover a paper cut?
What about latex paint? If you’ve ever had an old can of unused latex paint, you know that when it goes unused and dries to a plasticy, rubbery solid, it can be ripped. Does that mean you have to be worried that when the paint is on your wall, you should be concerned about it ripping?
Of course not. That is ridiculous.
If you are comparing pros and cons on a product, look at factors of its actual use that has some pertinence.
Elasticity is a far more relevant and realistic requirement to address environmental expansion and contraction.
We recommend you look at the Actual test requirements for these products from various building code testing agencies (such as meeting roofing membrane and pedestrian surface requirements), not evaluating based on theatrical demonstrations.
To view the testing results of Duradek for its actual use, visit www.duradek.com/testing-approvals/.

Coast to Coast Collapses Demonstrates Need For Deck Maintenance
Another deck collapse recently made the headlines; this time from a family gathering at a seaside vacation home at Emerald Isle, NC on July 4th, 2015. This instance took 26 family members down with the deck when it failed, sending 16 people to hospital with emergency responders and another 4-6 people from private transport. At least 5 of the injured parties were in critical condition. It was supposed to be a happy occasion intended to be captured by camera but instead became a nightmare its victims would like to forget.
According to the final report from Emerald Isle town manager (link to official press release below), 26 people were injured in the collapse. A building official concluded that corroded fasteners were the primary contributor that brought the 8-foot by 10-foot section of deck crashing 9 feet to the ground.
This follows last month’s horrific Berkley balcony collapse that claimed the lives of 6 of the 13 students that occupied the 4th floor balcony when it detached from the building. In this instance, the balcony reportedly detached from the building and swung down at a 90 degree angle sending all of its occupants to the ground below. A Berkley Building and Safety Division inspector said the deck’s severed joist ends looked “extensively rotted”. The outer beams of the balcony had sustained “significant rot and decay”. CNN succinctly summarizes this story and the findings in the official report.
It’s an all-too-familiar story of summer celebration turning tragic and why Duradek is an active supporter of the North America Deck and Railing Association’s Deck Safety Program. This deck safety initiative was created to increase public awareness on deck safety issues as well as provide some very useful tools for both consumers and professionals on deck evaluations and maintenance.
Deck maintenance is not just to keep your outdoor living space attractive. Deck waterproofing is critical in maintaining the structural integrity of your deck.
From west coast to east coast, the contributing factors to deck collapse are often the same and Duradek addressed these issues in Landlord BC’s ‘The Key’ publication in the summer 2015 issue with “Three Common Deck Collapse Factors and How to Avoid Them” (.pdf).
In most deck collapse occurrences, the decks were originally built to code, but water infiltration and its resulting damage appear to be the primary contributors to the collapses. Weakened wood from dry rot and fasteners disintegrated by corrosion would leave any deck unable to support the load it was originally built to sustain.
It is important to remember that while a deck is a cherished part of the home, its maintenance requirements are very different from most other parts of the home as it is the only load bearing part of the home that is under constant exposure to the elements.
In the final Emerald Isle report, town manager Frank Rush wrote, “North Carolina General Statures do not currently grant authority to NC cities and counties to conduct periodic building code or deck inspections of vacation rental units. Routine inspections of vacation rental units / exiting homes are the responsibility of the property owner and / or property management company.”
See the Emerald Isle final press release on the incident that includes building official’s findings, as well as police and emergency responders’ official incident reports (http://www.emeraldisle-nc.org/pdfs/PressRelease07072015-DeckCollapseFinalReport.pdf), or an overview of the story on Emerald Isle Deck Collapse on the WNCN.
Duradek vinyl deck membranes have been waterproofing decks and balconies for over 40 years. With this experience we know that when it comes to waterproofing, it is all in the details which is why Duradek is not available as a do-it-yourself product. Deck waterproofing is a specialty trade and general contractors may not have a full understanding of the specific details and techniques required for long lasting deck waterproof integrity.

Duradek Compares Vinyl Decking Warranties
At Duradek, we pride ourselves on having the best warranty in the vinyl decking industry, but we wouldn’t want to be complacent in our assumptions of offering the industry’s best warranty without checking out what other vinyl manufacturers are offering with their warranties from time to time.
We encourage you to do a similar comparison on vinyl decking product warranties before you make your product choice as well. There are several ways that a company can portray that it has a great warranty, but it is up to the homeowner to determine its real value. Don’t be swayed by being sold on a point that really isn’t that important. Similar vinyl products can be vastly different in their performance and their warranties can make that difference even broader still when you read the fine print and ask specific questions.
In evaluating the Product Warranty of 8 vinyl decking manufacturers, in most cases there is some variation of the statement, “The vinyl will be Free of Manufacturing Defects that may results in Leaks”.
Further to this, we noted some insightful questions for you to ask so that you can assess what actual value a vinyl decking product warranty provides to the end-user.
What exactly is the ‘Product Warranty’?
The Product Warranty is relevant only to the actual material and protects you from leaks resulting from a manufacturing defect. Given the nature of pvc (polyvinyl chloride) membranes, once vinyl decking is installed on a deck, any issues resulting from a manufacturing defect would typically be discovered during the first year or two (after the deck has gone through all seasons). If you have not experienced any defects in the material in the first year, you can be fairly confident that the vinyl was manufactured to adequate standards. So whether your vinyl ‘Product Warranty’ term is for 10 years or 15 years makes little difference since any manufacturers defects would be discovered long before the duration of the warranty term.
Does the Vinyl have an ‘Appearance Warranty’?
Since decking products are continually exposed to the elements, there will always be some level of appearance degradation over time, but there can be a big difference in what is considered ‘normal’ aging versus a product with an appearance failure. Most vinyl manufacturers will specifically state that they do not cover any appearance issues. But what happens if your brand new vinyl decking displays an extreme change in appearance over and above normal aging? With many vinyl decking warranties, you have no recourse if your vinyl’s appearance failed but the waterproofing was still performing.
Duradek’s warranty, however, offers 5 years of protection on surface appearance. That provides a higher level of real protection so that homeowners aren’t left with an aesthetically unsatisfying deck surface even if the waterproofing is still intact. Of course, this appearance warranty is applied only to manufacturing issues over and above normal aging and weathering and not resulting from misuse or neglect. If a company is not willing to warranty the appearance of their product, then one should always question, "Why not?".
Does the Vinyl have a ‘Workmanship Warranty’?
Many vinyl deck membranes offer a warranty only on the actual product, but some do offer a limited warranty on workmanship. Vinyl membranes are one of the most superior methods of waterproofing when installed correctly, but shoddy installation and poor details can result in leaks for the homeowner. That is why Duradek is not a do-it-yourself product and is only available as an installed product through trained and authorized dealers. Duradek’s warranty includes a separate workmanship warranty that is dictated by the installation company. Any performance issues resulting from installation can be addressed specifically with the installing company.
If repair or replacement is offered as the Product Warranty solution, is labour included? What about for an Appearance Issue?
Some vinyl decking product warranties allow for repairing or replacing the affected portion of the membrane, but not necessarily the labour required to install the replacement product to complete the repair. Duradek covers the cost of both material and labour on repairing vinyl that has failed due to a manufacturing defect. Further, if a vinyl deck appearance warranty claim was made in the first 2 years of its 5 year term, Duradek would cover the labour costs on that as well (past the 2nd year to the 5th year, the customer would be responsible for the labour on appearance issues).
If a refund is offered as the Product Warranty solution, is it based on what the customer paid, or simply the wholesale cost of the vinyl that the Installation Company paid?
Some vinyl decking manufacturers, particularly the ones that have longer term warranties, offer a refund amount on a failed deck. This refund amount is sometimes a percentage of the cost of the vinyl membrane that decreases each year of the warranty term. So if a vinyl deck membrane were to fail half way through the warranty term, the homeowner may only be provided with half the cost of the vinyl. Not only does that not address the cost of labour to replace the failed deck, but that portion of the vinyl cost can be the wholesale cost of the vinyl to the installing company, not what the homeowner paid. So in the interest in avoiding a lot of boring mathematics, suffice it to say that a refund based warranty, even when covering a 15 year term, does not leave the homeowner with adequate funds to replace the failed deck.
How long has the vinyl decking manufacturer been around? How many warranty cycles has it been through?
When it comes to building products, new does not always mean better. When investing in your home, would you rather take a chance on a new, unproven product or choose a product that has a proven performance history? If a company has been around long enough to have gone through several warranty cycles, they can be confident that their product performs as intended and as their warranty promises. For example, Duradek with a 10 year warranty has been around for over 40 years, and has seen Duradek vinyl perform for 3 times as long as its warranty coverage.
Is the vinyl decking warranty transferable to a new owner?
Most vinyl decking warranties are not transferable to a new owner; however Duradek is proud to stand by its warranty even when the building it is installed on is sold to a new owner. While having a new Duradek deck is something to be enjoyed, it is also a great value-added feature on homes being sold to have a reliable, low-maintenance deck. Duradek honors warranties when the home has been sold (but the new homeowner must be able to provide some documentation of when the work was performed to process any warranty claim).
What are the homeowner’s maintenance responsibilities?
It is important for homeowners to note that most vinyl decking warranties will indicates what maintenance responsibilities must be performed to keep their warranty intact. Similar to automobile warranties, there are some maintenance tasks that if not performed will void a warranty. Homeowners should be prepared to perform cleaning and an annual inspection and maintenance of any sealant (caulking) that applies to their deck.
We found it very interesting to note that several vinyl decking companies had either very little or no public information on their warranty programs, which in itself raises a question.
According to the information we have available, at this date, there are some clear advantages to Duradek’s warranty:
As you can see, the length of the warranty term is only one small factor in what the warranty actually will do for you. If you had a deck that looked like this one below after only a year, we are pretty sure you’d want a vinyl warranty that includes appearance and would cover the installation cost for the replacement.
If you’d like a little more detailed information on Duradek for your decking needs, contact one of our trained and authorized Duradek Dealers near you.
Other resources you may find useful in your research on vinyl decking:

Even low-maintenance vinyl needs occasional cleaning and annual inspection for any sealant details. |
What’s Really in the Warranty
Overall, the general length of the warranty term does not hold as much relevance to actual protection for the home owner as some of the other restrictions and limitations. We found it very interesting to note that several vinyl decking companies had either very little or no public information on their warranty programs, which in itself raises a question.
According to the information we have available, at this date, there are some clear advantages to Duradek’s warranty:
- Duradek is the Only Company to Offer a Warranty that is Transferable to a New Owner.
- Duradek is the Only Company to Offer an Appearance Warranty.
- Duradek is the Only Company to Cover Labour Costs on Appearance Related Issues (and perhaps even Product Related issues).
- Duradek is the Only Company that has been around for over 4 Warranty Cycles (Over 40 Years).
As you can see, the length of the warranty term is only one small factor in what the warranty actually will do for you. If you had a deck that looked like this one below after only a year, we are pretty sure you’d want a vinyl warranty that includes appearance and would cover the installation cost for the replacement.

Vinyl Decking Product Myths
Debunking the 'Acetone Test' Myth
Duradek, the original vinyl deck membrane, was the only product of its type back when it was first introduced in 1974.
Today there is a large variety of vinyl manufacturers presenting vinyl deck membranes of various widths, thicknesses and styles. And as most of us will agree, Not All Vinyl is Created Equal.
In this competitive environment, there is unfortunately a lot of flim-flam and parlour tricks being presented by some manufacturers to attempt to make their product appear to perform better than the others. When you are building a deck, be sure to chose products that are proven to perform as intended, not just touted to do things unrelated to its actual intended use.
Look at this short video clip where Duradek president, John Ogilvie discusses one of the claims being made in the Acetone Test.
So, how often do you have big containers of Acetone on your deck? The most common household use of acetone is nail polish remover, and as any woman who paints her nails knows, you always put the cap back on your nail polish remover right away to avoid spilling and discolouring any material.
Is withstanding discolouration from an acetone spill really a valid factor in choosing your vinyl deck product?
Is it reasonable to be running around on a deck with a can of acetone? Obviously, not. We feel it's about as 'reasonable' as evaluating your vinyl decking to how it stands up against an Ice Pick Test or a Blow Torch Test...all of which have very little relevance to real-life, day-to-day use of a sundeck. In over 40 years of business, Duradek has never once had an acetone warranty claim.
So don't be persuaded by irrelevant tests. Check the tests that really matter.
The take-away here is that you need to evaluate what is actually important. What really matters in selecting your vinyl decking are these four key points:
When you are choosing your vinyl deck membrane, be sure to select one that has a proven history and a warranty that actually provides some reasonable recourse should the product not perform as promised. With Duradek you can be confident that your deck and your home are protected with style.
To speak to a trained and authorized Duradek installer in your area about your decking needs, visit our Find a Dealer page.
Be cautious of competitors using parlour tricks that are used to distract from real issues and meaningful tests, such as Weather Testing (such as accelerated weathering ASTM G-90 shown below).
40 Years in Business and not once, ever have we seen, heard about or handled a complaint about acetone!

Appearance Promises of Vinyl Membranes vs. Long Term Protection with a Duradek Warranty
Be cautious when evaluating vinyl deck membrane choices…
Some companies offer a “Scuff Resistant” clear top coat, with No Appearance Warranty!! That's a pretty bold promise with nothing to back it up.
But really, the chance of light scuffing on a well-used deck is the least of your worries if you want a waterproof membrane that will last for decades.
Clear top coats have historically been a problem on plastics under constant UV exposure, but how do you determine how well a product will stand up in 10 years when it has only been on the market half that time?
Accredited testing agencies like Atlas Material Testing Services perform accelerated UV exposure tests to help answer that question.
These unaltered test results below show actual results of UV exposure testing (ASTM G90) of two brands of vinyl deck membranes. The product on top is a vinyl product with a clear top coat. The vinyl on the bottom is the ‘tried and true’ Duradek membrane with a 40 year history.
Pretty shocking, right?
Almost unbelievable, so the product was not just tested once, but twice…
The 2nd test included multiple product comparisons, and all those with a clear top coat exhibited the same failed results.
All vinyl scuffs to some degree under certain conditions…as does wood, composite deck boards, even concrete. In fact almost everything we walk on scuffs, marks or fades over time. This is the inevitable, realistic result of a ‘wear surface’; particularly with decks under constant exposure to the elements.
However, long term results should be taken into consideration. Be careful not to forgo the long term protection of a proven product with an appearance warranty for short term promises of “scuff resistance” that may have unexpected and unwelcome appearance issues over time.
Read here about the History of Clear Top Coats in the Pedestrian Vinyl Membrane industry. With deck surfaces, clear coats on vinyl have not traditionally been met with a lot of success…in fact most have failed miserably!

Duradek Solves 2 Big Deck Remodel Problems on Cottage TV
Decks, Docks and Gazebos program on Cottage Life T.V. specializes in creating the ideal outdoor living space for cottage locations with amazing views. Host Jason Lake takes on cottage upgrades from rough planning to final construction and in a recent episode, "Rob and Nancy's Gazebo Sun Porch" (Season 2, episode 6), he demonstrates how two big problems are solved with one design solution by using Duradek vinyl deck membrane.
Visit Cottage Life T.V. to view full episode (22:06 minutes)
The Scenario - Deck to Dock
Rob and Nancy's cottage has a gorgeous waterfront location with the front corner of the house only 10 ft. from the waterline. When looking out the window, they look at lake. It is a perfect place for entertaining and since so many people enjoy going down to the dock regularly, most times people gather on the lower patio instead of the upper level deck. Like most people with cottage properties, they just want a hassle-free getaway.
Problem #1 - Tired of Maintenance
Although the 10 x 40 ft. deck provides excellent lounging area with the fantastic lake view, Rob and Nancy are tired of the maintenance the typical drip-through deck requires. The staining and sanding every two years is too much work when they would much rather be enjoying the leisure time on their deck. As they put it, "The less staining we have to do, the better".
Problem #2 - Need Protection from the Elements
Rob and Nancy like to spend most of their time on the shaded, lower level deck but it is still open to the elements which can cause discomfort. They have to deal with the insects on the very hot days and on the days where there is rain, the drip through deck above does nothing to protect them and keep them dry when they would prefer to still be outside enjoying the view.
Host Jason Lake (who gained his celebrity builder experience with 'The Builder Boss - Jim Caruck') knew that he could solve both problems with one easy design solution using Duradek Vinyl Decking.
He could easily provide Rob and Nancy everything they wanted by incorporating a lower level sunroom into the design which is made possible with Duradek which has been tested and evaluated to meet building code for use as a both a pedestrian coating AND a roofing membrane.
Duradek, a brand of vinyl deck surfaces so trusted that it has become synonymous with vinyl decking is actually also a classified roofing membrane and provides a completely watertight seal. Authorized Duradek dealer, John Kellett from Kellett Sales and Contracting was on location to lend his vinyl deck installation expertise and to ensure the deck had the proper slope and that the substrate was prepared correctly for the application of the Duradek vinyl membrane.
Rob and Nancy selected Duradek Forest Floor Alder (one of 24 Duradek colour options)and John Kellett and his assistant laid the Duradek with best installation practices to guarantee roof-grade protection for their new sun room below.
Solution Step #2 - Provide a Maintenance Free Surface for the Upper Level Deck
See Solution Step #1.
The installation of the Duradek Membrane also solved the problem of ever having to re-stain the deck again. This was very important to Rob and Nancy as they found the labour required to re-stain the deck every couple of years was just too much for them.
With Duradek, they will never have to sand, stain or seal their deck again and they can just relax and enjoy it. The only maintenance Duradek vinyl deck surfaces require is the occasion cleaning which can be easily done with a scrub brush or power washer.
The Second Phase of the Deck Remodel
The addition of a gazebo sun room allows Nancy to get the feeling of being outdoors while still being protected from the elements, and this is made possible with the roof grade protection of Duradek above.
Once the challenging task of framing the sunroom utilizing the existing posts was completed with consideration for the screen door, the team was able to install the ceiling. Since the Duradek membrane on the upper deck provided the warrantied waterproof roofing, the ceiling below in the sunroom was purely to make it look good and cover the joists and the wiring. Rob and Nancy chose a tongue and groove pine with a white wash and Jason installed directionally away from the house, which requires a little more material and more labour but provides a clean, seamless look.
Once the framing and ceiling were complete, the last step was to install the screening and door to keep the gazebo sun room shaded and bug-free.
Duradek is also no stranger to home improvement television as several celebrity builders have turned to Duradek over the years to solve the specific problems of roof deck waterproofing.

Homeowners Happy with Duradek and their Sun Porch Deck Remodel
With their two most important criteria met on their new deck, Rob and Nancy couldn't be happier and are certain to use their new sun porch gazebo room very frequently...particularly since they have all that extra time with an upper level deck that no longer needs maintenance. Before Duradek, this deck was a high maintenance chore. |
After Duradek, this deck is a low maintenance pleasure! |

Do-it-Yourself Deck Projects Not Recommended by Duradek
Deck waterproofing is a very important detail in protecting the home. When if comes to the superior performance of vinyl membranes as your long lasting waterproof solution, you could unknowingly create future issues for yourself if you attempt to do-it-yourself.
PVC membrane waterproofing is possibly THE most reliable method of roof deck waterproofing available today, but only if it is done correctly, using proven installation details. Duradek professionals care much more about successful waterproofing for their customers' long-term happiness than just making a 'quick sale'.
Here we share an actual inquiry about a project in the Pacific Northwest; and the verbatim response provided by Duradek Northwest's Matt Whale whose 20+ years specializing in roof waterproofing provides advice to be taken seriously.
Because success and deck failure exists in the Northwest and since Duradek has a forty year local history, it is this history and experience that confirms that less than one percent of all deck vinyl problems are material related and as such, the issues fall clearly on a combination of lack of education, non-existent installation repetitive skill and detail design choice experience. Therefore a onetime user can never get or be proficient in heat welding, the proven and code compliant method of seam sealing, or the one time designer can never arrive fully up to speed on proper detail choice or material compatibility, nor does a “do it yourself” product offer any warranty protection other than a “warrant it yourself, you installed it”.
This gamble, you personally maybe embarking on, is in an industry or situation where the bulk of all building related litigation resides. The American Institute of Architects “Architect” publication**, in of June 2011, put it “Water intrusion makes up more than 70 percent of construction litigation”. Thus, Duradek’s lack of “Do It Yourself” products, though not your preference, is a prudent decision on Duradek’s part and subsequently, a major contributing factor to their unequaled, unparalleled or unsurpassed forty year success in the vinyl deck waterproofing industry.
If I can provide you an installing company who would be willing to team up with your handyman, to save you money, then I can be of service. I attached two articles for your consideration. (links below) **

Customer Duradek Inquiry
I am a property manager with a deck to re-do, approximately 100 sq. ft. Would like to have my very experienced handyman do the install if we can buy the materials. Plenty of installers down here, but I cannot find online a source in the Portland, OR area. Can you assist?Duradek Northwest Response
I am sorry that I am unable to fulfil your material purchase desire, but due to statistical failure rates of waterproofing products and the untrained worker, coupled third party product compatibility issues, improper design and/or detailing associated with Do It Yourself (DIY) products and projects, Duradek has elected not provide a DIY product. Wood Decks Beat Composite Decks for Value in 2015 Cost Vs. Value Report
The Hanley Wood Cost vs Value Report for 2015 confirms that in mid-range projects, Wood Deck additions bring more value to the home than Composite Deck additions.
Wood decks hit the top 5 of home renovation projects that best retain the value of the renovation cost based on resale value of the home. Wood decks at 5th best value with 80.5% cost recouped came in substantially better than a composite deck addition which came in at 14th out of 23 categories with 68.0% of cost recouped according to the Remodeling 2015 Cost vs. Value Report (www.costvsvalue.com).
The 2015 Cost Vs. Value Report compares average cost for 36 popular remodeling projects with the value those projects retain at resale (based on realtors’ perceptions) in 102 U.S. markets . Rising costs with lower rising values ended two years of gains by slipping 3.9-points from last year, but still show the second-best numbers in the past five years. Even though it shows a decline from last year, overall, wood deck additions are still among the best home renovation projects for value retention. On a national average, wood decks have a -7.9% cost-value ratio, with 12 markets showing a 100% return. Composite deck additions show a -8.6% and -9.5% cost-value ratio.
Only five project types saw their cost-value rations rise in this year’s report. Midrange roofing led the way rising 5.9%; and the other four gainers wither the midrange garage door replacement (up 5.6%), the 20-gauge steel replacement entry door (up 5.4%); vinyl siding replacement (up 3.2%) and upscale fiberglass replacement entry door (up 1.7%). The only project on a national basis that pays back more than its investment at resale value was steel entry doors. So when it comes to deck addition projects, wood deck additions consistently retain more value on the home than composite deck additions in all regions and major markets (* See below for breakdown of regional data).
Last week we recommended that in deck renovation projects that you Compare Cost of Maintenance Before You Renovate Your Deck as well as initial costs, and that advice still stands with this Cost vs. Value data.
Even though wood decks traditionally are a high maintenance deck surface often requiring annual labor to maintain its appearance and to be treated for water-resistance, when a wood deck is surfaced with a Duradek vinyl deck membrane it is protected for decades and will not require ongoing maintenance to keep its waterproof performance and thus the security of a safe, stable and attractive deck.
While Composite Decks also do not require any ongoing treatment to stay waterproof, the obvious results of lower retained value of composite decks as shown above may make your low maintenance deck choice an easier one by choosing a wood deck and protecting it with a Duradek membrane. Not only do you gain the low maintenance advantages of a vinyl deck, but if applied on a second level deck, you double your usable space by providing dry space below. While this was not its own category in the Cost vs. Value Report, most realtors will agree that doubling the usable outdoor living space with a long-lasting and low maintenance roof grade membrane will also add to the value of the home.
When you are comparing your options for a deck addition or renovation project, be sure to contact a Duradek installer in your area for an estimate and to learn more of the advantages of using Duradek vinyl deck membranes. When you decide to go with a Duradek deck, be sure to submit photos of your new deck in Duradek's 'Show off Your Deck' contest to win a new tablet!

Dry Below Decks Made Easy – Part 1: Trough vs. Top
They say there are two sides to every story, but when it comes to 2nd level decks acting as a roof for a patio below, you only need a one-sided solution – Duradek vinyl membranes. You don’t need the expense of an under deck drainage system if you have a deck surfaced with Duradek.
For an investment as large as residential properties, maximizing usable space is on the top of most home owners’ lists. It is certainly important to developers and designers who want to maximize the value of the homes for their clients. With the ever-growing demand for more outdoor living space it only makes sense to maximize space by turning an upper level deck into a roof for a lower level deck below.
Duradek vinyl deck membranes are the perfect solution as they serve as both the pedestrian deck surface and the roofing membrane in one single product application that completely considers protecting the building envelope. Under deck systems only serve as a water routing system (and sometimes a ceiling for the lower level deck) so you still have to consider the exposed surface(s) of the upper level deck separately.
1 – Trough systems
2 – Panel systems
Both of these systems function by allowing water to get through the upper level deck surface and then routing it between the joists to downspouts or gutters; neither system provides complete water-tight protection for the joists, fastening points, supporting beams or building envelope. Water is routed away, but moisture is still present and lack of air flow just traps that moisture between the surface of the upper deck and the roof of the lower deck. While some installation methods will rely on caulking or butyl tape to seal seams, you are unable to inspect if those seals remain intact as they are inaccessible once the deck is complete.
When the trough systems are installed, the material is usually not run up the siding of the house which means the building envelope is not completely protected and it is possible for moisture to find its way through, risking wood rot where the deck meets the house.
Another issue with the trough systems is that it is dependent on the area between the joists to allow the proper slope to route the water away. With a ceiling on a lower level deck, most people will run some sort of piping or conduit for electrical purposes and the placement of those may form damming or tenting causing an interruption of water flow and trap moisture.
The water flow of a trough system is routed to a downspout at each trough, but where the trough meets the downspout it is (again) not sealed. A simple, small cut where the trough terminates at the downspout is all that is performed to prevent wicking and keeping the water from getting below the trough. If the width of the water flow exceeds that of the cut, it can easily wick up below the trough.
A soffit system to serve as the ceiling on the lower level deck would have to be installed to conceal the troughs and joists. If any moisture has gotten past the trough it can become trapped within the joists and soffit system below with little airflow.
Finally, once a dry below trough system is completely finished, the upper level deck surface needs to be installed. At this point the fasteners puncture the trough membrane from above and may allow moisture into the joist area…but you will never know about it until you have a leak because it is completely buried between surface and soffit.
Duradek’s installation methods consider the critical details required for secure waterproof protection of the building envelope. Since those waterproofing details are so important in protecting the home, Duradek is only installed by trained and authorized installers.
Duradek is adhered directly to the plywood or concrete deck surface and all seams are heat-welded to ensure no water can ever penetrate. The membrane is run up the inside perimeter of the deck (recommended 6 inches) against the exterior of the building before the flashing details are added.
Water is managed by a 1” in 12” surface slope to the outside edge. Depending on the type of deck, waterproofing details such as edge flashing, drains, scuppers and a gutter system is included if required. All of these waterproofing details are heat-welded to be completely sealed. The perimeter edges can be caulked as they are accessible for annual visual inspections. There is no room for water infiltration with a Duradek system.
Once installed, Duradek reliably provides you a roof for the lower deck below and the walking surface for the upper level deck. On the lower level, the joists are still exposed but with open air flow they are not vulnerable to static water and any moisture will naturally evaporate. If you would like an enclosed ceiling and lighting installed for your lower level deck, the area between joists is completely dry and clear of obstruction for the addition of conduits and a soffit system.
Of the many reasons you might want to create a dry area below your upper level deck, choosing one of Duradek’s beautiful designer finishes offers the best choice for low maintenance decking that doubles your usable outdoor living space.
Check back next week when we take a close look at the second type of under-deck drainage systems – Panel Systems.

An attractive upper deck CAN double as a roof (see bottom image for lower level view). |
Why Under Deck Drainage Systems May Not be the Best Roof Deck Solution for You
There are two basic types of under deck drainage systems.1 – Trough systems
2 – Panel systems
Both of these systems function by allowing water to get through the upper level deck surface and then routing it between the joists to downspouts or gutters; neither system provides complete water-tight protection for the joists, fastening points, supporting beams or building envelope. While some installation methods will rely on caulking or butyl tape to seal seams, you are unable to inspect if those seals remain intact as they are inaccessible once the deck is complete.
A Closer Look at Dry Below Deck Trough Systems
The under deck drainage trough systems are only a realistic option for a new build decks as the troughs must be installed between the joists before the deck surface is complete. It is not a good option for existing decks as the upper level deck surface would have to be removed for it to be installed.
A trough style under deck drainage system can not be installed on an existing deck without disassembling it. |

Why Duradek is the Best Choice to Keep it Dry Below
Duradek is a PVC membrane system and has been waterproofing decks since 1974. Duradek is CAN/CGSB, CCMC and ICC approved as a pedestrian traffic coating and a roofing membrane. It is installed in a single application providing warrantied waterproof protection for 10 years, while its traditional service life reportedly averages 20+ years.Duradek’s installation methods consider the critical details required for secure waterproof protection of the building envelope. Since those waterproofing details are so important in protecting the home, Duradek is only installed by trained and authorized installers.
