5 Top Decking Trends For 2013

Creating or expanding outdoor living space is a top home improvement trend for 2013 and more than ever homeowners are taking advantage of the opportunity to make their decks an expansion of their home. Decks are no longer restricted to the traditional 20 x 10 foot rectangular deck with limited seasonal use but are fast becoming year-round usable space for leisure, entertainment and functionality.

Here’s a look at some of the top trends in decking in the last year.

1 – Double Your Deck Space

The days of the traditional deck owner are giving way to a new generation of homeowners who value outdoor living and are creating outdoor spaces that rival their interior square footage. One of the easiest ways to double your deck space is to use waterproof outdoor flooring on upper level decks to create dry useable space below.

Duradek vinyl membranes provide roof-grade protection.

This opens up a variety options for homeowners who can utilize that extra space based on their personal preferences and priorities. Whether for a simple covered patio, a screen-enclosed porch or additional dry storage area, the use of quality roof-grade waterproofing on your upper level deck is a great way to maximize your space. Surfacing your elevated deck with a Duradek vinyl membrane provides the roof-grade waterproofing you need to create dry, usable space below while at the same time providing an attractive, walkable surface in a single, one-time application.

2 – The Shape of Things to Come

Decks are no longer limited to the typical rectangle shape and are taking on a variety of formations to best suit the outdoor enthusiast. As mentioned above, two-level decks are a great way to maximize the space but creative design and innovative products are bringing multiple variations to the traditional deck space. Multi-level decks are gaining in popularity as outdoor living space increasingly emulates interior living with distinct outdoor rooms being created with the use of tiered deck levels and pergolas.

and with roof-grade waterproofing - dry storage below.
Additionally, deck space is not restricted to hard angles. Unique design elements like hexagon or curved decks are increasingly popular. Products like Durarail’s innovative Panorama Post topless glass railing system includes glass channels with a 60° angle variance to allow for easy installation on virtually any shape of deck while bringing a sophisticated railing solution to maximize your view.

3 – Functional Design with Railings

Railings are not just a functionary safety element; they are an integral part of the design and overall look of your deck. The railing options available today are many and varied which gives homeowners the advantage in coming up with a look that can really bring out the best of their outdoor living space and design preferences.

Topless glass railing systems provide a sophisticated look for the best view decks, cable railing systems provide a view through system that also allows for air flow and any combination of pickets, glass panels, and custom patterns can be assembled to create a truly unique system that gives your home some flair and reflect your individuality.

Customize your railing to suit your exterior design.

4 – Less Work, More Fun

Even people who really love their decks don’t want to have to spend entire days working on it. Sand, stain, seal…repeat annually. Sometimes waiting for the right weather to fall on days you actually have the time to work on your deck means your maintenance is left uncompleted. Or worse…you neglected the maintenance on your wood deck too long and now you are dealing with wood rot and replacing the whole structure.

Why labor on your place of leisure?

Deck enthusiasts have been opting for low maintenance decking materials that allow them to just enjoy their deck, not labour on it. Composite decking materials have gained huge popularity over that last several years, however the quality and longevity of those products has appeared to be a bit of a gamble as seen in some class action suits from some very unhappy composite decking customers.

For a best bet in low-maintenance decking materials, Duradek vinyl membranes have a 40-year proven performance history and provide many years of warrantied waterproof protection for your deck with only a one-time installation. Just a seasonal cleaning is all these deck surfaces need to keep looking great…so people who enjoy time on their decks can continue doing just that!

5 – Fantastic Features

With the trend of increasing the amount of deck space to create versatile outdoor living areas, homeowners are taking advantage of the many options of features available to create their distinct outdoor rooms. Outdoor furniture, fully functional kitchens, fascinating water features and impressive fire features that provide ambiance as well as warmth are some of the most sought after features to incorporate into deck areas.

These additions work great as add-ons, but many deck builders are incorporating these features right into the structure of the deck with built-in seating, lighting and other appliances. Homeowners get the most out of their budgets by proper planning with their deck builder to ensure the most critical elements are included. What can’t be built in immediately can often be added on later.

The Truth Behind the Trends

Just remember that protecting your deck with proper waterproofing is the most critical detail and should be considered right at the beginning of your deck building or renovating plans. No matter how soundly built the structure or how beautifully detailed the features, if your deck is not protected from the elements, eventually it will deteriorate which will affect its stability. Safety is always the most important feature of your deck no matter what the current trends may be.

Dealing with Snow and Ice on Your Vinyl Deck

Winter is here and in many regions snow has already blanketed the landscape. After a moment of appreciation of the pristine beauty of a fresh snowfall, your spirits may be dampened by the anticipation of the realities of dealing with the snow and of the maintenance required to survive the winter.

Those of you who have a deck protected with Duradek’s Walkable Rooftop Deck and Waterproofing Vinyl have an attractive and low maintenance decking solution throughout the year and winter is no exception. Duradek vinyl allows for easy and worry-free winter deck care.

Duradek vinyl is strong and you can use a variety of snow and ice melting solutions on it without concern.
  • Rock Salt - OK!
  • Kitty Litter (for non-slip traction) - OK!
  • Snow Melting Chemicals - OK!
Luckily, for the Duradek homeowner, Duradek’s superior vinyl strength and durability is not threatened by Mother Nature.

Duradek deck in the winter
Duradek can handle the snow and the ice-melters to get rid of it.

Duradek patterns and colors are beautiful all year round, but how does a homeowner ensure that they are going to get the most longevity in their deck’s appearance when the wicked winter weather attempts to cover our decks with ice and snow?

All you have to do to ensure your deck is unaffected by brutal winter conditions is to remember a couple of simple tips:

Only use a plastic shovel to remove snow and ice from your deck surface.

  • Driving a metal shovel down through the snow and ice to your deck surface risks puncturing the vinyl and sacrificing your waterproof security.

Clean your deck with soap and water, and rinse before the spring and summer sunshine returns.

  • While the chemicals from de-icers do not damage the vinyl surface when applied, if its film is left on the surface, direct sun can bake the chemicals into the vinyl which is harmful and will affect your deck’s appearance.
That’s all there is to it! Now you can rest assured that you can take all precautions available to keep your deck clear of ice and snow through the cold winter months and look forward to the return of the warm weather to get back to enjoying your deck again.

If you do not yet have a Duradek waterproof deck and you would like to talk to a Duradek dealer about your decking needs, contact a Duradek dealer in your area for a free estimate.

Free Registration for International Builders Show - February 2014

The NAHB International Builders Show (IBS) is only a couple of months away so if you are a building industry professional now is the time to start making your plans to attend.  Taking place at the Las Vegas Convention Center February 4th - 6th, 2014, IBS is the largest annual light construction show in the world and now is even bigger as it co-locates with the Kitchen & Bath industry show.

Duradek invites you to attend with free exhibit hall registration and come by to visit us at booth #S1919 to discuss your deck building challenges and waterproofing needs.

http://www.buildersshow.com/Duradek

Expected to attract over 75,000 builders, remodelers, developers, architects and other industry professionals from over 100 countries, The International Builders Show will house over 1,500 exhibitors to demonstrate the latest product innovations and building solutions for virtually all of your construction needs.

In addition to co-locating with the Kitchen & Bath show, this year’s IBS offers a few more changes as well, specifically within their Education Programs. The 2014 education enhancements focus both on content and delivery with new session formats, technology upgrades, a variety of interactive architectural and design plan reviews and more hands-on demonstrations both on and off the show floor.

The Building Knowledge Sessions have been revamped for 2014 with approximately 100 sessions available being reduced from 90 minutes to 60 minutes to allow for a more focused, in-depth discussion.

For example, Building Knowledge Session – Utilizing More Trade Contractors is a great stop for remodelers and small volume builders who have to balance the cost and value of maintaining a dedicated staff versus utilizing trade contractors. In some cases it may make much more sense to develop loyalty with trade contractors, particularly in specialty trades like deck waterproofing.  If you are a small volume builder or remodeler, developing a relationship with your local Duradek contractor who has been specially trained and have access to Duradek’s impressive technical support and proven techniques can be a huge asset to your business when your projects require decking expertise!

Additional education programs include Spotlight Sessions where experts discuss emerging trends and expanded Master Sessions to cover even more important topics in building.

Not Only About Building Knowledge

While the exhibit hall and the education sessions will pack your mind with insight and ideas, IBS is not just about education. There are a variety of networking and social events to help you balance out the show with a little fun.

  • IBS Opening Ceremonies (Tuesday, Feb. 4th, 8:00 – 9:15 a.m.) - 4-star general and former leader of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), General Stan McChrystal headlines the opening ceremonies and few others can speak with such authority on leadership and teamwork.  Additional inspiration comes from the performances of Cirque Fantastic with awe-inspiring and breathtaking feats with their distinctive, elegant acrobatics well suited for a Las Vegas stage. Limited seating – first come-first served.

  • The Official IBS House Party (Tuesday, Feb. 4th, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.) – a laid back way to kick off the show the right way with great music and food at the Hard Rock Café on the strip. Tickets Required.

  • IBS Spike Concert (Thursday, Feb. 6th, 5:00 – 7:30 p.m.) – 4 time Grammy winner Pat Benatar performs with Neil Giraldo at the South Hall S4. Tickets Required.

  • Young Professionals After Hours Party (Wednesday, Feb. 5th, 8:30 – 10:30 p.m.) – For the under 40 crowd, a networking social event with live band, open bar and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets Required.

How to Clean and Care for Your Vinyl Deck Before Winter

Before the really heavy rain or snow takes over for the chilly winter months, now is a smart time to give your deck a cleaning and inspect the details that will ensure the superior installation of your Duradek vinyl deck is still performing as expected and protecting your home from potential water damage.

Cleaning Your Duradek Deck

Your vinyl deck should be cleaned at least 4 times a year with the Duradek vinyl cleaner available from your local Duradek dealer. This cleaner is designed specifically for vinyl and will NOT leave harmful chemical residue like many household cleaners may. Use warm water and a stiff broom, scrubbing in a circular motion to loosen the dirt. Then simply spray with a garden hose (under pressure) to wash away the loose dirt and flush thoroughly with clean water.

If you choose to use a household cleaning product, we would recommend Cascade Powdered Dishwasher Detergent or Simple Green as reasonable options, however we do not recommend the use of household cleaners in general as certain types of cleaners, powdered abrasives, steel wool and industrial cleaners can cause damage and discoloration. Dry cleaning fluids should not be used as they will remove the printed pattern and glass. Waxes should not be used as they may contain dyes or solvents that can permanently damage the protective coating. Your best choice of cleaning products will state that it is safe to use on vinyl.

While all cleaning methods require a thorough rinse with water, using any household product dramatically increases the need to flush the deck thoroughly with clean water to ensure all residues are removed. The residue may not be obviously visible to the eye, but if any remains, the sun can bake the harmful chemicals into your vinyl and it may affect its appearance.

If your vinyl pattern is one of the more textured surfaces that offers a more effective non-slip characteristic, it will likely require a little more cleaning effort than a vinyl pattern with a smoother surface. Power washing is an effective method of removing dirt and debris, although it is not intended for removing embedded stains. Set your power washer at 1500 psi (max.) and hold nozzle 12 inches from the surface and be careful to avoid seams, railing attachments, caulking or house trims.

Care for Your Duradek Deck

Deck inspections are an important part of your home maintenance and should be completed at least once a year.

When inspecting your deck, remember to:
  • Check the caulking seals around posts and pillars
  • Check corner details
  • Check the caulking seals around vents and drains
Check that the perimeter of you deck against the house
remains securely sealed.
Be sure to check seals around posts and pillars and
that the flashing on the outside edges is securely in place.

Over time, the structure your Duradek membrane is adhered to may crack, shrink or shift and these inspections will uncover any potential problems with broken seals. If you discover some caulking has pulled away from the wood or a seal has cracked, contact your Duradek dealer who will recommend the proper sealant to correct it.

It is much better to check for these little details before the heavy rains come and you discover water has found a way to get through into your home.

Cleaned and Cared For…Now Enjoy!

Though no exterior surface is completely impervious to the elements, by taking the small amount of time required to properly clean your deck at the change of the seasons, you will help to ensure that your deck appearance lasts as long as the guaranteed waterproofing performance of your Duradek vinyl deck.

No matter what the season, Duradek protects your outdoor living space all year, every year.

How to Clean Fungus and Mold off Duradek Vinyl Deck Membranes

Any permanent outdoor surface needs to be cleaned from time to time, and your vinyl deck is no exception. While the benefits of having a vinyl deck include no sanding, staining or re-coating of any kind, your deck will look its best with a seasonal cleaning (about 4 times a year).

Sometimes, however, there are contributing factors in your environment that may cause you to require more than a general cleaning on your deck's surface. One of these factors is mold and fungi which in some areas under certain conditions can be a troublesome maintenance issue like that experienced by some homeowners in Florida experiencing green and black growth on their metal roofs.

The bottom line is that it is difficult, if not impossible, to control all of the factors that contribute to mold growth and your best defense to keep your vinyl deck clear of fungus and mold is a general cleaning 4 times a year.

Step One - Start With a General Cleaning

Ideally, your vinyl deck should be cleaned at least four times per year (more often if acid rain or airborne pollution is a problem in your area) using Duradek vinyl cleaner which is available from your authorized Duradek contractor or directly from Duradek. Follow the directions on the label.

This cleaner is designed for vinyl and will NOT leave a harmful chemical residue like many household cleaners may. Use warm water and a stiff broom, scrubbing in a circular motion to loosen the dirt. Spray with a garden hose (under pressure) to wash away the loose dirt. Flush thoroughly with clean water.

Note: It is very important to remove all residue from cleaners used on your deck. While the cleaner itself may be gentle enough, it is when the sun 'bakes' the chemicals into the surface that your deck can experience discoloration.

Step Two - Mold and Fungi Removal Recommendations

Sooty Mold - Image from USDA Forest Service.
Both Artillery Fungus and Sooty Mold have similar cleaning procedures. For plastic and painted surfaces that might have sooty mold, the USDA recommends:
  • 1/3 cup powdered household detergent
  • 1 quart household liquid bleach
  • 2/3 a cup of Trisodium phosphate
  • 3 quarts of water
  • (be sure to use rubber gloves when cleaning with this solution)

Clorox® recommends using their "Outdoor Bleach" product diluted at a rate of 1 part Outdoor Bleach to 6 parts water, as per their recommendations for cleaning vinyl surfaces. Apply early or late in the day when the membrane surface is cool to the touch. Apply solution with a garden sprayer and allow to sit on the surface for a minimum of 10 minutes. Re-apply the solution to areas that begin to dry during this period.

Use a soft bristle brush on a pole to scrub the membrane surface. Small remaining spots can be cleaned using a firmer bristle brush. Then rinse the entire area thoroughly with a garden hose.

Note: at the time of publishing this article, Clorox® Outdoor Bleach is not available in Canada. When using any cleaner, make sure the manufacturer recommends their product is suitable for outdoor vinyl products and their written instructions are followed.

Details on Common Mold and Fungus

Artillery Fungus are dark raised spots about the size of a pencil tip that do not melt into a larger circle. For further information on how to control established Artillery Fungus in ground cover, see this document from the Penn State University website.

Sooty Mold is a dark fungi which leaves dark spots or darkish areas which look like, well, soot. For further information on how to control Sooty Mold, go to Virginia Tech website.

If you are experiencing hard-to-remove mold on your deck, you may be interested in reading this excellent case study that was conducted by Duradek distributor, Duradek MidAtlantic which documents the diagnosis and removal of Sooty Mold.

HGTV’s Income Property Called on Duradek for a Waterproofing Solution

Popular HGTV home renovation show 'Income Property' urgently needed a waterproofing solution and they knew the waterproofing professionals of Duradek could help them solve it.

Host, Scott McGillivray and his team were working on a complete basement renovation to create a rentable income suite so the new owners could afford their new home, and with a new baby coming there was no time to waste and no money to spare.

Everybody was excited about the plans and even the electrical upgrades and asbestos removal wasn’t cause for concern. It was when they were removing the ceiling panels that enthusiasm was dampened. And dampened was exactly what had happened to the framework of the home.

"I have to tell you, I've never seen anything like this." - Scott McGillivray
Initially, the source of the moisture was unknown, but at some point a corner-cutting contractor had cut a tubing pipe in half to act as a channel to route accumulated water from its unknown source through the ceiling and down the wall to a drainage pipe. You don’t have to be a building expert to know that method is not an ideal water management solution, but the real concern now was that until the source of the water infiltration was found, any and all efforts they invested into the basement renovation would be wasted. The affordability of the house without the income suite was not realistic and having taken on a huge mortgage, the owners were in a very vulnerable position.

Scott McGillivray knew this critical element must be solved before proceeding. Through testing by applying water to the suspected points of entry, Scott determined that the water was entering the home through the flagstone back porch entryway that was situated over the suite. This is an unfortunately common problem when builders who are not waterproofing specialists mistakenly assume the stone and mortar will be enough to stop water infiltration, but over time water will always make its way through.

One of Scott’s team members recalled using Duradek on a previous project and knew it was a reliable method of waterproofing, so they decided to try using a Duradek vinyl membrane and then laying the flagstone pavers on top of it. When the show contacted Duradek to help supply this important building material for episode 8, Sales Manager Kevin MacMillan was able to offer something even better suited for their project - Duradek Ultra Tiledek.

Tiledek was the perfect solution for this problem and a better option than laying the flagstone pavers over top of the original walkable Duradek vinyl membrane. Tiledek is made with the same quality PVC and is applied with the same professional waterproofing details as the original Duradek membrane. It even comes with a 10 year waterproofing warranty like the original Duradek and Tiledek has been tested and approved as a roofing membrane. The feature that made Tiledek the superior solution for this project is that Tiledek is manufactured with a fabric-embedded surface intended to accept a thin set mortar to adhere a final walking surface like tile or the flagstone pavers. So on this project, Tiledek was the best solution for providing a 100% waterproof system.

The Duradek Ultra Tiledek was installed by HTR Duradek in Ontario; one of Duradek’s leading authorized installers. All Duradek waterproofing systems are available only through authorized installers that have been trained in the intricate details involved in the specialty trade of deck waterproofing.

Only after the membrane was securely installed with all of the proper attention to the perimeter and drainage details could the stone layers come in to finish the job. Fortunately, with Tiledek membranes, once it is installed there is no drying or curing time required and the stone layers could start their part of the project immediately with no time delays to keep the project on track.

With the water infiltration resolved, the rest of the renovation was completed and the owners could proceed with finding a tenant for their beautiful new suite to help them afford the home where they can raise their family.

Watch HGTV to See How the Professionals Rely on Duradek Ultra Tiledek

Tomorrow, Thursday, November 7th, 2013, HGTV's lifestyle series 'Income Property' airs episode 'Nick and Karen' in which Duradek Ultra Tiledek is used to solve a difficult waterproofing problem. Airing on November 7th on HGTV Canada and Tuesday November 12th on HGTV U.S. (check your local listings) Income Property is all about bringing in revenue from your real estate. Protecting the structure of the home and your investment into it while avoiding costly repairs is a very important part of that.

Many HGTV programs show what can happen in a home where years of DIY projects or even the use of unqualified contractors can turn a simple project into a catastrophic rebuild, but perhaps no home renovation or maintenance project is as critical as waterproofing.

Once water has invaded a home, wood rot, mold and a number of undesirable consequences can turn even a mostly well built home into an ongoing maintenance project. That is why it is so important to use qualified tradesmen for the specialty skill of deck waterproofing. Not only is it important to have a structurally sound and waterproofed deck, but there is a direct relation to the water-tightness of the building envelope that can affect other areas of the home.

This is particularly important when a deck is situated over living space....and that is why even the professional builders call on Duradek for waterproofing decks over living space.

See how HGTV's Builder Boss used Tiledek in a unique roof deck application over a subterranean room in our article 'The Builder Boss Relies on Duradek Ultra Tiledek' or how Mike Holmes made it right with Duradek on episode 7081 Rocky Reno.

porch waterproofed with Tiledek
Stone, tile and pavers still require a method of waterproofing underneath.
On Income Property's 'Nick and Karen", Duradek Ultra Tiledek is used to waterproof a small back porch.

Tiledek is the ideal membrane waterproofing for use under outdoor tile. Many people are familiar with the original Duradek membranes that provide the waterproofing and walking surface in one, but Tiledek provides secure roof grade waterproof protection with a PVC membrane that was developed with a textured surface to best adhere thin set tiles. Used in conjunction with other elements of your outdoor tile assembly, Tiledek is able to provide relief from leaky tile decks where other systems fail.

In this particular project the overall square footage of the porch does not make it seem like a significant factor, but the fact that it is situated over living space which is intended to be the income generating part of the property makes it one of the most critical details in this project overall.

Income Property host, Scott McGillvary's hands on approach to renovation and real estate has enabled him to build his own real estate empire with dozens of properties and hundreds of tenants. Scott takes his knowledge and experience to help cash-strapped homeowners and teaches them how to generate income from their existing residence. Duradek Called on to Waterproof in Upcoming Income Property Episode on HGTV

HGTV's award winning lifestyle series 'Income Property' is in it's 8th season, and Duradek is proud to be a supplier for the upcoming episode 'Nick and Karen' on November 7th on HGTV (check you local listings).

Host, Scott McGillvary's hands on approach to renovation and real estate has enabled him to build his own real estate empire with dozens of properties and hundreds of tenants. Scott takes his knowledge and experience to help cash-strapped homeowners and teaches them how to generate income from their existing residence. A big part of that is starting with the right products for home renovations.

Duradek is the ideal solution to invest in a home's value by creating a beautiful and waterproofed outdoor living space and ensuring the area below is dry. While adding dry space below any balcony is advantageous, it is particularly important when a deck is situated above living space. Protecting the structure of the home is of the highest importance and the Duradek system of waterproofing does just that.

In this episode of Income Property, Duradek provides Tiledek, our reliable waterproofing membrane designed specifically for use under exterior tile. While Duradek membranes are the waterproofing and walking surface in one, Tiledek provides secure roof grade waterproof protection with a PVC membrane that was developed with a textured surface to best adhere thin set tiles. Used in conjunction with other elements of your outdoor tile assembly, Tiledek is able to provide relief from leaky tile decks where other systems fail.

Like Duradek, Tiledek membranes are only available through our network of trained installers who know the critical details that can not be overlooked when it comes to deck waterproofing.

After all, especially with income properties, you do not want to have to use the money you've generated to pay for unexpected renovations due to damage caused by water infiltration. Nor do you want to use a deck waterproofing system that requires ongoing maintenance. While some waterproofing systems will require recoating and traditional wood decks demand sanding and re-staining to maintain their appearance and waterproof functionality, Duradek is maintenance free. It is installed with a one-time installation, can be used the same day and is warrantied to last 10 years (while many homeowners report it's functionality up to twice that long). A simple, seasonal cleaning is all that is needed to keep your deck looking great. For any property owner, that is a plus!

So remember, check you local listings and get that PVR ready for Income Property on November 7th!
