Demand for Outdoor Living Space Creates Development Trend in Vancouver

The increasing demand for outdoor living space is seen all over North America, but cities like Vancouver help drive this trend with its mild climate, gorgeous views and abundance of talented designers, developers and products created specifically to best build a deck.

Local specialty building products like Duradek vinyl deck membranes help to accomplish the ideal outdoor living space with the fundamental of reliable waterproof protection to take care of the practical implications of decks and balconies, but the cascading business effect of this trend reaches landscape architects, builders, designers and artisan craftsmen working with decking, fencing, masonry and retailers with décor.

According to the Vancouver Sun article “Vancouver Home Buyers Fuel Outdoor Living Trend”, one condo developer is even favouring large balconies over space for a dining table and a second bathroom. They key is to make outdoor space livable, regardless of whether it is a single family home or a large multi-residential condo.

“We are seeing the trend affect the architecture in neighbourhoods as well,” said interior designer and project manager Benjamin Simpson, who works largely with west-side Vancouver’s $2 million-plus single-family homes.

“Modern, flat roof construction allows for large rooftop patios that have been a huge selling feature for the spec homes we have designed.” said Simpson, co-owner of Blank Canvas Interiors. Simpson claims that clients used to spend half as much on their exterior budget than indoors but “now it’s almost par,”. Sixty percent of Simpson’s clients now ask for exterior design – five years ago it would have been half that.

Duradek is the foundation of enjoyable outdoor living space.

A product like Duradek vinyl decking is the most fundamental investment for accomplishing this design trend with its roof grade waterproof protection. Duradek is a roofing membrane and walking surface in one, and provides reliable waterproof protection without the need for ongoing maintenance, which is a huge advantage to home owners to save them the cost and time involved in higher maintenance waterproofing systems and deck surfaces.

Vancouver building experts have known and trusted Duradek for decades. Local building celebrity Shell Busey has recommended Duradek vinyl decking from way back on his House Smart television segments, his House Smart Referral Network, and as recently as last month in a Vancouver Province column “Ask Shell”. In this instance, Shell was recommending Duradek’s Tiledek membrane above traditional torch-down products for waterproofing under a stamped concrete roof deck.

In a high-rainfall climate, Vancouver building professionals have to be confident that their waterproofing is handled expertly. That is where Duradek has earned the reputation for reliable waterproof protection. Originating in BC over 40 years ago, Duradek knows the waterproofing and aesthetic value of their decking product…but Duradek also knows that no matter how great a waterproofing product is, it has to be installed correctly to perform as intended. This is why Duradek is only available as an installed product through its network of trained, waterproofing professionals throughout North America.

If you are planning on creating new outdoor living space or renovating an existing deck or balcony, be sure to consult with a Duradek vinyl decking expert before you begin your project….and remember, Not All Vinyl is Created Equal.

NOTE TO THOSE IN THE VANCOUVER, BC AREA:

Be sure to plan to visit Duradek at the fall Vancouver Home & Design Show on October 22-25 in a new location this year at the Vancouver Convention Center West. You’ll find Duradek at booth #122 and it’s a great opportunity to see the latest Duradek patterns and colours first hand and talk to someone about your decking needs. Hope to see you there!

Latest Outdoor Design Trends for 2015

The most recent survey highlighting top outdoor design trends for 2015 was released a couple of weeks ago by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and it reveals that sustainable and low-maintenance design is the top trend for residential landscape projects.

These trends have further developed from the 2014 survey results that had attractive spaces for entertaining and relaxing on the top of the list, demonstrating that outdoor places of leisure are most desirable when they require little to no labour to maintain.

The 2015 ASLA Design Trends Survey was redesigned, introducing a new methodology to more clearly rank the popularity of different types of landscape projects. While the top landscape project type was indicated as Native Plants (85 percent), the three most popular outdoor design elements include fire pits/fireplaces (78 percent), lighting (72 percent) and grills (63 percent). Spa features like hot tubs, Jacuzzis and swimming pools were indicated as the most popular outdoor recreation amenities (40 percent).

See Article: 4 Ways Pool or Hut Tub Areas Benefit from Duradek

Hot Tub and Pool surround areas benefit from Duradek.
Decks remain a popular design element in the increasing trend of outdoor space and are ideally included in design plans with the low-maintenance expectation in mind. Duradek has been a leader in this product category having introduced its low-maintenance deck waterproofing vinyl over 40 years ago.

In an article “Products for Creating an Outdoor Oasis” in Hanley Wood’s Remodeling magazine online, Steve Van Kouteren of Principia Consulting says, “The outdoor living trend has been talked about since the early 2000s. As the trend develops and more manufacturers produce products, more options and price points are available, so more consumers can take part. Synthetic decking used to be one or two products and now there are all types of products. When you add the new products and price points to a recovering economy, you get a growth in a trend.”

See Article: Overload of Options Cloud Decking Decisions

The Hanley Wood Remodeling article also features a slide show of New Products for Outdoor Living Spaces that support the trends most in demand and includes the latest Duradek vinyl deck membrane offerings in the all-new ‘Legacy’ line of its walkable roofing grade membrane. The Legacy line offers faux-natural finishes in Barnwood (brown), Driftwood (grey) and Pebble Beach in Duradek’s reliable low-maintenance waterproof vinyl.

See the Press Release: Duradek Introduces the Natural Choice for Deck Surfaces.

Builder magazine recently reported on the inclusion of outdoor living space in floor plans and Hanley Wood’s house plan sales group content director Hillary Gottemoeller states, “My general impression is that more plans are incorporating outdoor living space than previously.” Before, she says, “designers may have left this more to the discretion of the buyer, but now in response to consumer demand (or really expectation), they are at the very least showing it on their floor plans and even incorporating it into the footprint/design.”

So if a new or remodelled deck, patio or balcony is part of your residential landscape design plans, be sure to consult with a Duradek Dealer for your low maintenance waterproof deck surfaces.

Grey is the New Black and Other Residential Trends from 2014

Residential trends for 2014 continued to show that the demand for outdoor living space is on the rise as it has been for the last few years with the housing market's slow but steady incline of recovery.

A survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) showed a 97.7% popularity rating for terraces, patios and decks. This survey details a wide range of outdoor living trends but the general consensus was that people want low-maintenance design suited for entertainment and relaxation. People simply want more time to enjoy their outdoor living space and less time maintaining it.

Here's a look at some of the top trends in outdoor living space features in 2014.

2014 Top Trends in Outdoor Living

Grey is the New Black
The sleek, contemporary look of black residential design that featured prominently the last few years has given way to softer and more versatile greys. With homeowners embracing extending their every-day living space outwards, this residential colour trend extended to outdoor living space as well.

Duradek's Ultra Cork Graphite as seen in Professional Builder magazine.

Professional Builder Magazine shows off Duradek’s contribution to this trend with our latest color ‘Graphite’ from the ‘Ultra Cork’ line of waterproof vinyl. The beauty of Duradek is not just that it gives your deck an attractive surface, but it also provides warrantied, roof-grade waterproof protection.

Size and Shape is Right Out of the Box
The traditional 10 x 20 foot rectangular decks have given way to expansive deck and patio areas in a variety of shapes and sizes. While the average size of decks seems to be increasing, the trend is towards multi-level structures with unique shapes that can flow and carry the design of the house out and into the landscaping.

Multi-level decks with various shapes create distinct rooms.

Sustainability – Eco Friendly Design Practices
People want something cost effective, but they also want to act in environmentally conscious ways that minimize the impact on the environment at both the point of installation and with maintenance and long-term sustainability. It may surprise you that pvc membranes are considered 'green due to their long lifecycle. The fact that PVC membranes are installed on non-treated wood also contributes to their limited environmental impact as opposed to treated wood which eventually ends up leaching chemicals into the landfills.

Duradek vinyl has a low impact on the environment.

Lighting
Outdoor lighting shone brightly in 2014, particularly with creative uses. Cleverly designed lighting systems worked into ornamental post caps, decorative balusters and outdoor furniture were significant additions to design features in outdoor living space. From expensive built-in lighting to unique, simple lights strung above a deck have replaced the old patio lantern strings and are a simple way to update your outdoor design.

Seating and Dining Areas
Not a new trend, but more popular than ever, lounging and dining areas have taken on new forms as built-in seating is incorporated into deck designs. Bigger deck space with distinct shapes or levels have opened the way for separate dining and lounging areas.

Decking trends include separate seating and dining areas.

Customization Outdoor living areas, like a home's interiors, are a unique expression of their character and preferences. Pergolas, walls, functional areas, planter' boxes, storage and accessories are all ways in which homeowners expressed that individuality in 2014. Functional design is key! Outdoor Kitchens Beyond the basic grill, complete outdoor kitchens with cooking surfaces, sinks, fridges and yes, grills are carrying on from 2013 trends and are an example of how home owners are extending their day-to-day living outdoors.

The Dog Days of Summer - Enjoy Them With a Deck Makeover

The Dog Days of Summer are are marked by the Old Farmer’s Almanac as the 40 days beginning July 3rd through August 11th. While in ancient times this had a negative connotation as a time of drought, our fortunate present translation usually indicates enjoying this time with the least amount of rain in the northern hemisphere. What a great time for a deck makeover!

Ideas for a Deck Makeover

Go Big When You Go Home – Outdoor living space has become a favorite feature for many North American residences. The old style of constructing decks to a 10 foot by 20 foot single surface has been replaced by a growing number of expansive decks. In addition, you can double your deck area by using your second level deck as a roof for a deck area below. Deck waterproofing specialists like our Duradek trained applicators can provide a roof-grade deck surface on your upper level deck, enabling you to double your outdoor living space with a protected lower level deck below.

They Are Not Like Grandpa's Railings – There are now a variety of styles of railings available for defining your outdoor living space. In addition to traditional picket railings, you can also select glass railings, stainless steel cable railings or powder coated aluminum railings that can provide the classic look of wrought iron without the need for maintenance. Go one step further and combine any of the above options for a completely unique look. Durarail powder coated aluminum railings allow for standard or custom designs, and incorporating unique features can provide the best of design and functionality for your individualized deck.

and picket railings - both by Durarail.

Get Creative With Shapes – There is no need to be stuck in same old rectangular shaped deck with today’s decking options. Choose octagonal, oval or multiple curves to create a unique shape that brings an element of contemporary style to the traditional feature of a deck.  Innovative railing products like Durarail’s Panorama Post allow you to define a curved deck with a topless glass railing system that virtually “bends” around corners.

Multi-Level Decks – Decking trends like outdoor kitchens, permanent (as opposed to seasonal) outdoor furniture and fire features contribute to the use of outdoor living space being used as often as any other room in your home. Incorporating multiple levels to your deck with distinct separation allows you to treat each level of your deck like a separate room. While your outdoor kitchen is on one level, your lounging area can be another and your spa is on yet another…the possibilities are endless based on your favorite leisure activities. When your deck surface is protected with Duradek vinyl, the area below is kept dry; and even if a lower level of your deck is only elevated a couple of feet, that provides some great dry storage for gardening supplies, camping gear or other outdoor toys.

Outdoor Living Top 10 Trends for 2014

More and more homeowners are taking their renovation plans to the great outdoors and instead of adding additions to their homes they are extending their everyday living space outside by adding or renovating their outdoor spaces. Renovating outdoor living space is not just for the ‘staycation’ but for an elevated quality of life every day, all year long.

It is no surprise then that a survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) showed a 97.7% popularity rating for terraces, patios and decks. The survey details cover a wide range of outdoor living trends but the common consensus was that people want low-maintenance design suited for entertainment and relaxation. People simply want more time to enjoy their outdoor living space and less time maintaining it.

It is relatively easy to adapt what add-ons you select for your outdoor living space as the latest trends or your personal preferences change, but it is imperative to start out with a solid foundation like you can get with a deck protected with a Duradek membrane. Professional Builder Magazine shows off Duradek’s latest color ‘Graphite’ from the ‘Ultra Cork’ line of waterproof vinyl. The beauty of Duradek is not just that it gives your deck an attractive surface, but it also provides warrantied, roof-grade waterproof protection.

This is a fundamental and very important detail to remember…no matter what kind of details or features you want on your deck; it is the foundation that is critical to get right the first time. The First and most important part of moving your living space outdoors is to create a safe, waterproof outdoor surface, on which you can build your outdoor living area. A properly built structure that has reliable waterproof protection means that you will have a deck you can rely on for decades.

After reviewing a wide variety of design, architectural and landscaping opinions, we’ve compiled a list of the top trends in outdoor design for 2014.

Size and Shape is Right Out of the Box
The traditional 10 x 20 foot rectangular deck is giving way to expansive deck and patio areas in a variety of shapes and sizes. While the average size of decks seems to be increasing, the trend is towards multi-level structures with unique shapes that can flow and carry the design of the house out and into the landscaping.

People want something cost effective, but they also want to act in environmentally conscious ways that minimizes the impact on the environment at both the point of installation and with maintenance and long-term sustainability.

Lighting
Outdoor lighting has a bright outlook for 2014, particularly with creative uses. Cleverly designed lighting systems worked into ornamental post caps, decorative balusters and outdoor furniture are making an appearance. Unique, simple lights strung above a deck have replaced the old patio lantern strings and are a simple way to update your outdoor design.

Seating and Dining Areas
Always popular for the central entertainment area of a deck, seating and dining areas are taking on new forms as built-in seating is incorporated into deck designs. Additionally, furniture elements are trending to ‘natural’ forms such as rough-wood or stone structures.

Customization
People’s outdoor living areas, like their homes’ interiors, are a unique expression of their character and preferences. Pergolas, walls, functional areas, planter boxes, storage and accessories are all ways in which homeowners will be expressing that individuality in 2014. Functional design is key!

Accessories
While neutral tones will always have a place in residential exteriors, they are being splashed up with accessories like pillows, rugs and other fabrics. Popular options for 2014 include bright, cheerful colors, geometric art deco-like patterns and ethnic, tribal themed patterns.

Outdoor Kitchens
Beyond the basic grill, complete outdoor kitchens with cooking surfaces, sinks, fridges and yes, grills are carrying on from 2013 trends and are an example of how home owners are extending their day-to-day living outdoors.

Fire Features
Whether it is a small, lantern style accent, set within a pond, or completely built into a full exterior wall; fire features are incredibly popular and with many options available, there is a fire feature in virtually an size and shape you desire.

Outdoor Recreation
This one is definitely not new, but there’s nothing like an old favourite to help you get the most out of your outdoor living space. Whether it is a swimming pool or a hot tub, a little liquid R&R is a time honored back yard favorite. What is new for 2014 is an increase in desire for outdoor saunas.

Gardens
It may have fallen down the priority list for a couple of generations, but today’s homeowners are gardening enthusiasts. With the increased desire for sustainability and healthy living, a place for growing fruits, vegetables and herbs is a top priority with homeowners. For those that want to garden for the sheer pleasure of the greenery, lush gardens rife with Native Plants is a top trend and these natural looking landscape are much more forgiving when behind on maintenance than their sculptured counterparts.

We hope this has inspired you with some ideas for your deck makeover plans. But remember to start with a good foundation...and a great way to start with that is to talk to your local Duradek expert.

5 Top Decking Trends For 2013

Creating or expanding outdoor living space is a top home improvement trend for 2013 and more than ever homeowners are taking advantage of the opportunity to make their decks an expansion of their home. Decks are no longer restricted to the traditional 20 x 10 foot rectangular deck with limited seasonal use but are fast becoming year-round usable space for leisure, entertainment and functionality.

Here’s a look at some of the top trends in decking in the last year.

1 – Double Your Deck Space

The days of the traditional deck owner are giving way to a new generation of homeowners who value outdoor living and are creating outdoor spaces that rival their interior square footage. One of the easiest ways to double your deck space is to use waterproof outdoor flooring on upper level decks to create dry useable space below.

Duradek vinyl membranes provide roof-grade protection.

This opens up a variety options for homeowners who can utilize that extra space based on their personal preferences and priorities. Whether for a simple covered patio, a screen-enclosed porch or additional dry storage area, the use of quality roof-grade waterproofing on your upper level deck is a great way to maximize your space. Surfacing your elevated deck with a Duradek vinyl membrane provides the roof-grade waterproofing you need to create dry, usable space below while at the same time providing an attractive, walkable surface in a single, one-time application.

2 – The Shape of Things to Come

Decks are no longer limited to the typical rectangle shape and are taking on a variety of formations to best suit the outdoor enthusiast. As mentioned above, two-level decks are a great way to maximize the space but creative design and innovative products are bringing multiple variations to the traditional deck space. Multi-level decks are gaining in popularity as outdoor living space increasingly emulates interior living with distinct outdoor rooms being created with the use of tiered deck levels and pergolas.

and with roof-grade waterproofing - dry storage below.
Additionally, deck space is not restricted to hard angles. Unique design elements like hexagon or curved decks are increasingly popular. Products like Durarail’s innovative Panorama Post topless glass railing system includes glass channels with a 60° angle variance to allow for easy installation on virtually any shape of deck while bringing a sophisticated railing solution to maximize your view.

3 – Functional Design with Railings

Railings are not just a functionary safety element; they are an integral part of the design and overall look of your deck. The railing options available today are many and varied which gives homeowners the advantage in coming up with a look that can really bring out the best of their outdoor living space and design preferences.

Topless glass railing systems provide a sophisticated look for the best view decks, cable railing systems provide a view through system that also allows for air flow and any combination of pickets, glass panels, and custom patterns can be assembled to create a truly unique system that gives your home some flair and reflect your individuality.

Customize your railing to suit your exterior design.

4 – Less Work, More Fun

Even people who really love their decks don’t want to have to spend entire days working on it. Sand, stain, seal…repeat annually. Sometimes waiting for the right weather to fall on days you actually have the time to work on your deck means your maintenance is left uncompleted. Or worse…you neglected the maintenance on your wood deck too long and now you are dealing with wood rot and replacing the whole structure.

Why labor on your place of leisure?

Deck enthusiasts have been opting for low maintenance decking materials that allow them to just enjoy their deck, not labour on it. Composite decking materials have gained huge popularity over that last several years, however the quality and longevity of those products has appeared to be a bit of a gamble as seen in some class action suits from some very unhappy composite decking customers.

For a best bet in low-maintenance decking materials, Duradek vinyl membranes have a 40-year proven performance history and provide many years of warrantied waterproof protection for your deck with only a one-time installation. Just a seasonal cleaning is all these deck surfaces need to keep looking great…so people who enjoy time on their decks can continue doing just that!

5 – Fantastic Features

With the trend of increasing the amount of deck space to create versatile outdoor living areas, homeowners are taking advantage of the many options of features available to create their distinct outdoor rooms. Outdoor furniture, fully functional kitchens, fascinating water features and impressive fire features that provide ambiance as well as warmth are some of the most sought after features to incorporate into deck areas.

These additions work great as add-ons, but many deck builders are incorporating these features right into the structure of the deck with built-in seating, lighting and other appliances. Homeowners get the most out of their budgets by proper planning with their deck builder to ensure the most critical elements are included. What can’t be built in immediately can often be added on later.

The Truth Behind the Trends

Just remember that protecting your deck with proper waterproofing is the most critical detail and should be considered right at the beginning of your deck building or renovating plans. No matter how soundly built the structure or how beautifully detailed the features, if your deck is not protected from the elements, eventually it will deteriorate which will affect its stability. Safety is always the most important feature of your deck no matter what the current trends may be.

Then the real pleasure in designing your outdoor living space is making sure that the reliable waterproofing of your deck does not take excessive maintenance and that it is also an attractive addition to your home. After all, it is a place that is used primarily for pleasure and should be visually pleasing and harmonize with the overall design of your home.

Duradek vinyl membranes have been a reliable source of deck waterproofing for nearly 40 years and with over 20 colors and styles to choose from there is something for nearly every residential design motif. One of Duradek's most recent lines of vinyl patterns is the popular 'Cork' line that offers 4 beautiful options for outdoor flooring. Natural cork has become known as an attractive flooring material for interior walking surfaces and Duradek Ultra Cork Natural vinyl allows this look to be lent to a home's exterior providing a harmonious extension that can unify the overall design.

The attractive pattern of the cork vinyl is not restricted to the natural color of cork, and variations such as 'Espresso', 'Macchiato' and the most recent addition, 'Graphite' provide color alternatives for a stylish and sophisticated look. As seen on Housing Zone, the online hub for Professional Deck Builder and Professional Remodeler magazines, Duradek Ultra Cork is a stand-out in design options for outdoor flooring. And while it's beautiful appearance is a highlight, the real beauty of Duradek's Ultra Cork vinyl is that is one of the most reliable methods of waterproofing your deck on the market today.

A deck protected with stylish Duradek Ultra Cork vinyl.

Installed exclusively by trained and authorized Duradek dealers who are familiar with the intricate and critical details involved in deck waterproofing, Duradek vinyl membranes are warrantied for 10-years for waterproofing. But the peace-of-mind does not stop there....Duradek also comes with a 5-year appearance warranty for excessive discoloration which is a rare benefit in decking products that are constantly exposed to UV rays and naturally will fade over time.

Duradek clearly stands out above other vinyl options, as well as other decking materials like some composite decking products that have had such massive appearance issues that class-action suits have had to be settled.

When it comes to your outdoor living space, make a choice that lasts with style...protect your deck's surface with Duradek vinyl membranes.
